Mirabilia's Enchanted Mermaid

Has anyone actually done this piece? I loved the pattern and bought it, but when I checked out the beads I'd need for it, I darn near died. 38 packages!! And some of those are treasures which are very expensive. Never mind the special threads. Guess I'll use that fabric for another project. It's pretty but not worth all that.

How about adapting the design to suit you ? You don't have to do it exactly the way she says - then you have something that is more you!

AH, well - I don't know if kindness is ever seen as one of my outstanding personality characteristics - but that is it. Hate seeing people want to do something and not being sure of how to make it work for them. Plus, it's fun to inspire people to maybe take a step they'd been unsure about - if they want to.

WRT getting free stuff...It's not all too easy. Indeed most designer programs involve free stuff for the designer, but IME most aren't getting kick-backs, so to speak. Though some, like Nora, have managed to develop enough following, etc to have Wichelt (major distributor) promoting her "Nora Corbett for Wichelt" line. Caveat, I believe that this also had something to do with business arrangements, her divorce getting settled and her doing something that wouldn't fall into that mess. For the most part, in the current times, designers purchase materials at wholesale from distributors, then once the design is published, will get the materials replaced - or sometimes the money - from the actual supplier. Some companies will provide things like designer rings of threads, some samples. Fabrics - swatches. Sometimes a piece to work with. It varies. Famous, successful folks, and once you have a track record of following up with publication, may get supplies up front for the sample piece - without paying. In the world of the designer/teachers I'm friendly with - most of us (and believe me -I'm very low on that totem pole) including the famous, order stuff thru their wholesale accounts. And that's what you use for making samples, and if you have to kit. Sometimes you get freebies of some new product like a new bead size, or metallic, some new dyed thread. It's not as straightforward or easy as I used to think. Takes networking, time, effort, and setting up some form of official business. Not to mention joining the trade association - which isn't inexpensive (about 10 times what it costs a retail shop).

For me, and at least the canvas work teachers/designers that I know - it's a bit of work and fun to play with some of these threads, beads, etc. Then you may have an idea of working it into a design - which will of course then factor into the reality of if the piece is too pricey to be stitched, etc. Which is then where sometimes it's good to offer thread packs - at least of specialty threads. Ugh. Making me think of work....and deadlines. I've been trying to put together the final costs for some stuff that I'm proposing for regional seminars, not to mention finish the finishing ;^)

Well, back to laundry - so I can bring my DH his body bag of goalie gear for tonight. We just gave our tix for tomorrow to our seat neighbor who desperately wanted them to be able to bring his son for a birthday outing. Ah, well. And hoping the Canucks pull it together (I have them in the pool).

Regardless - it should all be happy stitchin' & happy hockey!
