To Cool Raz: Firing Reduction glazes at cone 08....

I tried to e-mail you the answer to this question with no luck... I think you got my e-mail from this newsgroup and so I am posting the answer here...

Dear kool raz: Reduction firings can take place at lower temperatures than 1300 Celsius. But you need peep holes in the kiln to determine exactly what cone is going down. Raku firing takes place at cone 08 or about 985 Celsius. Raku is the Japanese method of firing decorative ceramics by which pots are removed from the kiln red hot and put into a metal barrel filled with pine needles, leaves and or sawdust. Then the pots are taken out of the barrel after twenty minutes and put into cold water.... The results are very beautiful and striking. The ware is not usable, but is decorative. If you are seeking to make functional ware at low temperature with reduction glazes, then that will still be possible. You simply have to reduce the kiln by cutting off the exit flue and shutting down the primary air vents. (yellow flame) for about two hours and hold the kiln up at the 1000 degree celsius temperature... You still need a kiln with peep holes in the door or side. I have a book of formulas with Cone 08 reduction glaze recipes. Here is a food safe glaze that should fire at 1000 degrees celsius...

Oxford feldspar 390 Colemanite 330 Flint (silica) 130 Barium Carbonate 110 Zinc Oxide 40

PS... I have several Pakistani friends that sell in our local crafts market place. Selma does traditional Henna tattoos and makes necklaces as well. In winter she sells scented soaps. Zaff and his wife Eli sell jewelry in this market as well. While my grandfather spoke Farsi, Greek, Turkish, French, German, Italian and some Russian, I can only converse in English. But if you have something important to convey to me and have trouble with the English words, perhaps one of my friends will interpret for us.
