Wondering about making words to place on pieces

Hi guys

What with the discussion about stamps, I was wondering if anyone has tried stamping into a wet piece of clay, then letting the clay dry - then taking another piece of clay and pressing it into the original piece in order to make letters that stick out instead of ones that are indented into the piece. I mean, for one piece of text, it is a lot of work to make a plaster mould - or is it?

That's how I make my signature stamp.

Okay - this method I need to understand better. You let the clay mould dry, spray it with WD40 and then mold wet clay into it and let that dry - or take it out before it dries?

Hugs to you too :-)

Do you just etch your signature, then let dry then push a stamp in to get the pattern? Do you use something to make sure the pattern comes out neatly?

I do one of two things; either I carve the lettering (in reverse of course) into leather hard clay, dry it and tidy it up and then bisque fire and use as my stamp, or, carve a design into a piece of plaster or use a found object, push that into a piece of clay and bisque fire the latter, subsequently using it as a mould to make repeat (bisque fired) copies. I usually put two impressions onto my work; my signature stamp, made using the first technique, and a stamp that says *Bath* which I made using printers type to make the mould for the second technique.

Okay - so dry clay isn't worth the bother - it should be bisque fired, right? How about glazing the original in order to get smoother surfaces on the copy/stamp?

I also write 2 things on my work... my signature, and the year - eg '05 - and sometimes the month - so '05 7 - in order to follow my progress when I am having difficulties.

Hmmm - printer's type - not much of that to be had these days! HEhe!
