'hand made' quilts

While looking through furniture stores today dd and I happened on a really pretty embroidered import quilt. I walked over to take a look at it and dd shoook her head and made this comment: "made lovingly by chinese dissidents". Kid gets her sense of humor from her father. Taria

Maybe she did but I love it!! Are you sure we don't have the same daughter? My daughter's line used to be "Yeah, hand made by some 6-year-old making ten cents a day in Bangladesh."

But they're probably right. :-(

I generally refuse to have anything to do with that sort of thing because of the child labor issues. However, several years ago I ran into an imported quilt at K-Mart with a simply spectacular top and bought it. When I got it home it was clear that while the top appeared to have fairly good construction that the quilting -- 1 inch stitches in lines 8 inches apart! -- was abominable, the the binding was actually shredding. So the quilt wasn't even close to being usable and would never survive a wash. After sitting in a bag for several months, I finished it properly. I kept the godawful "quilting" as basting while I quilted the thing with stitch in the ditch, and then put a double bias binding on since I happened to have a large enough hunk of fabric in a complimentary color tucked away. Now it's a very handsome quilt at the foot of a bed, and has made it through several trips to the laundromat.

I bought a comforter set from B*rylane H*ome, which came with a "free quilt." The construction of the quilt was just as you described. The "quilting" stitches looked more like basting stitches, and they ran the width of the quilt straight about 6" apart. You are exactly right, it wasn't even usable.

Howdy!

Sounds more like a Chinese conformist, going along w/ the way things are (a dissident would be anti standard-state-of-affairs), having an income, any income.... Hand made- somebody's hands, anyway, w/ a huge needle and some kite string stitches. ;-P
