OT Wedding Hell

This has got to be one of the most insane weddings I have ever been involved with. I suppose that since it is DD2's that sort of makes a kind of backhanded sense. Everything was going smoothly, then the last minute disasters began.

Swine flue, Mexico, the honeymoon to Cancun was off. The resort offered them Jamaica instead, and they took it though I wish they hadn't based on principal.

The garden they are being married in restructured their management, and the lady now in charge of private events is a complete ditz with no clue what she is doing or even what is stated in their standard contract. Of course since rain is forecast it may be moot anyway.

My parents cancelled with two weeks notice because my dad hurt his shoulder and can't drive.

DD1 who was supposed to be a bridesmaid cancelled with 10 days notice. Not only did her BF become unemployed, but she has had a sudden and severe outbreak of psoriasis. It is all over her chest and arms, and she would rather die than wear her strapless gown in front of people. This is the first outbreak she has ever had, though it runs in the family. Rather than asking a groomsman to step down, DD2 had the dress fedexed to her and is trying it on all her friends.

The car rental agency apparently lied to everybody they talked to. The maid of honor was going to drive a van full of people down and back. Now they have decided that DD2 cannot pay for the van, the driver has to, and they won't let her rent one to drive out of state because she has never rented a car before. We have split everybody over a couple of vehicles, but DH will miss the rehersal because his ride leaves Saturday.

My sewing machine broke a needle when I was sewing down the lace overlay on the bodice of my dress. Normally no biggie. However the needle broke on nothing, and I strongly suspect demonic posession. The machine not only sucked the broken part of the needle into the bobbin, it sucked a fair bit of dress down with it. The dress is ruined, in fact I still havent gotten it all out of the machine yet. It just about shredded the bit it sucked in. which unfortunately was a combination of lace, charmeuse, and noil. Semi-empire with a lace overlay on a charmeuse bodice with a noil skirt, all silk, made the lace myself, DH was certain I had sewn my hand to it when he heard me shriek.

All of the bridesmaids, DD2, and me, are majorly bloated, crampy, and running late with regard to Mr Monthly Visitor.

Two weeks ago kiri's endocrinologist found a lump in her throat, and got her in for a biopsy in two days. The verdict is freaky looking cells, and they want to remove part or all of her thyroid. We got the results today.

The school tried to schedule Ash's year end meeting without us. We got it rescheduled for the 20th, but the only day before then that we can tour the alternate facility for next year is tommorow. Good thing the car rental place messed us around. DH will do the tour, I will be on the road.

kiri's disability hearing is tomorrow. After waiting for it for three years, rescheduling is kind of out of the question.

And finally, Ash is all stuffed up and running a temperature. If he is not better by Saturday, DH will have to stay home. Asking Ash to put up with a 10 or 12 hour drive is trepidatious to begin with, asking him to do it sick is right out of the question.

DD2 and I have discussed this over the phone, and have come to the conclusion that a gallon of Death by Chocolate ice cream, a bottle of pamprin, and a liter of rum are definitely called for on Saturday night. Saturday morning we dress shop for me. Saturday afternoon we do the rehersal. Saturday night we wallow in self indulgence. Take out chinese and Steel Magnolias may strongly figure in the evening.

The wedding is Sunday, I expect we will all survive unless the groom's mother throws a tantrum and tries to claw her ex-husband's girlfriend's eyes out. In that case I will just have to kill her, unless somebody else beats me to it.

Good golly, what a nightmare. My best gal friend married off her daughter a few weeks ago. It was beautiful from my vantage point. Bride thought so too but my friend was pretty done in by the whole thing. She says the mother of the bride just isn't going to enjoy the day no matter what. I hope it all comes together easier than it looks from now. Lot of the stuff falls into place and other stuff nobody else will notice Just don't break a leg like Kathyl. Good luck and travel safe. BTW, Did anyone notice that mercury is retorgrade? Taria

OMG.....I don't even know what to say. What a mess. No matter what happens with the wedding, I'll send all my good thoughts for a great MARRIAGE! You're right, the day will come and go and be what it is. A week later, it will all be moot. We had an ice storm on DD's wedding day, many of the guests didn't show up and lots of food went uneaten. The limo went to the wrong church and was 45 minutes late picking up the wedding party from the church and they all missed the happy hour with the specially selected musicians. The DJ got stuck on the interstate behind an accident and missed the introductions, the first dance and cake cutting. But despite all that, they are now married and happily getting on with life. Best wishes to you all. Don't forget to breathe.

My goodness, are you sure you're not married to Steve Martin? You could always sell the film rights and make some real money Lol.

Good luck and really hope it goes to plan. Hugs Bronnie

Oh my! I was going to whine about having 4 tires slashed overnight--on all of our cars. But, your current dilemma makes me realize I have nothing to whine about!

Hang in there!

Oh how I wish we could all come help. I do. You need help. Never ever heard of so much going wrong or wonky in my life. Steve Martin would be a nervous wreck. They are right. Just breathe. In. Out. Keep going. Polly

Sewing your hand would have been easier to deal with. Glad Legolas is there to help! ;)

A couple of years ago the Church of Scotland (not renowned for public expressions of common sense) issued a statement giving their line on the trend for high-expense weddings. It made a lot of sense to me. In summary it went:

- we want people to get married.

- we don't want expense and complicated logistics to stop them.

- a wedding just needs the people getting married, a minister to do the ceremony, a place to do it, and a couple of witnesses.

- it does not need any special clothing. at all.

- it does NOT need huge travel expenses - nobody needs to go anywhere.

- people are just as married if they spend the absolute minimum, and might well have a happier marriage than if they try to turn the event into a display of wealth and end up putting most of their emotional energy into wondering if everybody was impressed enough and worrying about how the heck they're ever going to pay for it.

- God doesn't care how much you spent or what you looked like on the day.

This is perhaps not a way of seeing it that somebody who makes wedding dresses for a living might want to catch on, but I see their point entirely.

I TOTALLY agree w/Jack Campin.... i even tried to get my DS and his Fiance' to get married in Vegas w/ minimal expense so that they could save $$$ for a house. Alas. I was shot down. White wedding in LA, this September. I guess wisdom is not an option when weddings are being planned.
