Alteration success

We don't do special events very often but there's one coming up and I had to have a special. Found a lovely silk shirt. The matching skirt was 3 sizes too big. No problem. Flutey, swirly chiffon. Lined. With a zebra print. And 9 inches too long. I carefully, timidly measured 8 inches down from the band, carefully pinned it lots. Machine basted it. Basted it again an inch and a quarter above that. Used the cut-off - which, of course was bias and 4 seams - to make a new band. Would you believe? I got it perfectly the first time. When someone asks me to do an alteration, I apologize that I can't do alterations because I just have no skill at 'fitting'. That satisfies them and helps my blood pressure. This skirt scared the stuffing out of me. Wish you all had been here to help. Polly

Oh EXCELLENT, Polly!!!!!!!!! Alterations can be very scary. But once you do a few, even if you have to bite your lip the whole time, there's no stopping you ever again. :)

Good job!!!

I did only alterations for 45 years. Rather alter than make a garment. Audrey from Long Island NY

I've got 3 pairs of slacks that have too much material/room in the crotch. (Grrrrrrrr, hate pants that do this.) I'm going to be tackling those in a few days. Right now all I've done is some basting stitches to make sure I've not taken too much material away in this area or to see if I need to take a smidge more. I'll probably end up trying these pants on a dozen times each _just to make sure._

Yes you will LOL. I have to do the opposite as I have a long rise. If I don't try on a few times, crotch winds up down around my knees.LOL Audrey

I mostly do mending. It wasn't supposed to be that way; it just happened.
