Doldrums

There's plenty of exciting sewing to do.

I can't seem to get on with it. I'm trying to get back into the groove by playing with some of the old gadgets and sorting through things like making buttonhole samples for comparing.

I think I may set up the serger later and make the dotted net shrug I need to go with a customer's Karen Millen ultra skinny party frock. A quick little project like this will be easy and soon over, so not too daunting.

What do YOU do when you hit the doldrums?

I can't remember; there's always the destructo fairy to keep me busy. ;-) But seriously, perhaps you should just sit down in a corner, quietly, with a nice book, and wait till it's over. You know, there's more to life than just sewing; you can read about it, too. ;-))

Oh, BTW reading: According to your suggestions, I got the Narnia Chronicles and they make rather nice reading. I'll see if I can get a decent translation with the original illustrations to give to the Queen of Chaos once she's old enough. And I got an annotated Alice with classic illustrations. I have to agree that it is a charming book, although no child should be left alone with it. Parental guidance advised... ;-)

And tonight I'm going to the opera with mom, to see Mozart's 'Magic Flute'. A little thankyou for all the babysitting she did during wedding preparations. And today in one week's time, we're off to our vacation at Borkum (tiny North Sea island, for those who are not that familiar with European geography). Plus, we wanted to get started with the office room tomorrow, rearranging the furniture so that it makes a good sewing room, too, See, I've got loads to do and no time for doldrums. (No wonder so many housewifes fall into depressions once the kids are out of the house; imagine, all that time on your hands and you've got to plan what to do with it all by yourself!)

U. ;-)

I borrow from my Mom2 sometimes and just sit in a corner playing with a pair of socks :-) And sometimes, I just go through the projects that are waiting and find something ultra-easy to remotivate myself. I'm kind of in the same boat right now...have to get things made for the upcoming show and have NO desire to mess with any of it. Would rather just play with the fabrics instead of having to fuss with patterns and directions and such.....so, I played online for a few days and am just now starting to get back into the mood to sew....good thing since my workroom once again looks like a fabric store exploded. big

BTDT! The new Diana Wynne Jones arrived from Amazon yesterday lunchtime. I gave it to Alan to read at teatime, having finished it! Point 303 Bookworm, me!

And there's a pair of customers coming on Tuesday morning for fittings. I need to throw her skirt together and put the buttonholes and buttons on her first bodice, and remake and replace the collar on his jaket, make the sleeves up and get them in, and get the tails on his coat...

Hehehehe! Pauline Baynes wa the Narnai illustrator. I still have the A grade college essay I wrote about her illos... Also try Diana, my most favourite children's author.

Opera and sewing room: great combo. Post pix of the office-->sewing room conversion. Remember to keep a corner of office to keep all Edgar's work related papers in order. It's a working room and a filing cabinet is not out of order. I need to get one for Alan.

I have the shrug in my eye for that! :)

Thank you darling! Hugs much appreciated.

I think part of the problem is that I'm suffering from post Christmas/mad sewing let-down, coupled with cabin fever after the snow, and my fibro flaring like the Northern Lights!

I don't have fingers, I have saussages with knuckles!

Usually I surf the sewing sites on the web to gather inspiration. Or play spider solitaire until my brain cries out for stimulation!!

I am putting a dress together that I have been inspired to do after seeing a lovely dress on a re-run of project Runway. Surfed the web for pictures till I found and am now happily piecing bits of fabric together.

Something else.

I dangle a reward for myself with a promise of doing/reading/buying a special something. If I cannot make myself sew, I read. If I don't have an interesting read on hand, I garden. If it's winter and I cannot garden, I cull 'stuff' and ready a big donation pile. Right now, my sewing room is in desperate need of a good tidying, so I find it daunting. But I have a project which must be finished by the end of the month, so as soon as I get the rest of the holiday decor stowed downstairs, I'll treat myself to a big mocha and tackle the job.

I did a massive tidy of sewing stuff before Christmas so my brother could sleep in the sewing room. It'll take 10 minutes to get it ready for the next single guest, half an hour for a couple, the same for two singles... And that includes dragging the extra bedding down from the loft and stowing some sewing machines, and getting out the guest half of the bed from under the single bed. Hm... That half is still propped up on an axel stand. Must get Himself onto bed mending!

I had to pospone my frocking weekend because of the bad weather. I do need to catch up on the tidying of the conservatory so that can go ahead smoothly...

I find I get more done if I do things in small burst, divvying up the greater task into bite sized chunks. It may take longer than it used to before the fibro, when I could just hammer at things for a day and shift tons of crap, but it does get done.

I also tend to swap between tasks that require sitting and things that take physical doing. That way both lots get done and I don't stress myself or wear myself into a hole.

I'm dragging a lot of excess fluids with me at the moment, and trying to get into this Waterfall Diet properly. Going is slow.b The excees tires me and give extra pain I could easily do without. And sewing isn't easy when the latest attack centers on the arms and hands!

Meh! Enough moaning. I had a fun day: played with several differeant machines to make buttonholes, and solved a zigzagging problem with one of the Cub 4's, got a couple of loads of washing done (with the help of the GMNT. Not a trad fun thing, but a sense of having achieved something USEFUL is good!), and watched last night's episode of Waking the Dead with the GMNT, and the Star Trek Movie again! And then tickled him with my toes until he fell off the sofa in a giggling heap! Pair of big kids, us... :D

No, I'm not always a conventional mother.

Yeah, at least half of the present reluctance to do anything other than curl up on the sofa with some fruit tea, a pile of quilts, the cats, and a good book or movie is due to the latest fibro incursion! I blame our recent Big Freeze and the wet that is following it.

I've been surfing the sewing sites and doing a lot of 'virtual sewing' ;)

I want to get this shrug done, and then see what I can do over the next two days on the Victorian project...

I really wonder how you do that... It took me a week to read 'Gone with the Wind' in my schooldays, and that although I'd read on the bus and under my desk. But frankly, I can't remember what it is like to read uninterruptedly. ;-)

Yes, see, they go away on their own, doldrums. So one better sits back and enjoys them. ;-)

I'll try her; I think I've seen a Japanese animated film about Sophie in the walking castle. Liked it, although it had these horrid Manga characters in it. CAught a glimpse of 'Gormenghast' on TV but couldn't watch it. Interesting, though not to DH's taste. Wonder if it might be worth to get the books. ???

Opera was great, althoug a modern adaptation; everything in black, white and grey, but very nice. And no distraction by fancyful costumes necessary, singing was excellent. The Queen of the Night was one of the best I ever heard. As for the sewing room, alas, DH objected; but we cut the hedge yesterday and today I've got loads of time to do other things as DF (Destructo FAiry) is still with DSIL. I'll take pics, though.

Oh, BTW pics: I put up pics of DD on flickr (

Giggles...

The film was OK, if one didn't know the story. The story is much better and very funny.

Do. I'm sure you can manage most of the furniture removals and organization, so long as you baby that finger a bit.

I shall go and have a look, but I's also appreciate a couple sent, as I'd love to put one on my new digital picture frame key ring fob!

Clean the house. Top to bottom. Then I feel so much better. Gives me an extra oopmh and I get other stuff done.

-had a bout of that last week. The kids were off school for 2 weeks for holiday break. Then off one more full week b/c of winter weather. Cleaned like a crazy woman when they went back finally.

Ack! NO! That just depresses me more!

There are odd corners that need doing, and the conservatory and my bedroom need severe mucking out, but both will takes several days I don't have between now and Tuesday!

LOL I feel all Righteous when I get the house done. Makes me feel like I deserve to do whatever I want. :)

Giggle... I got the stuff done for the fitting, with a couple of hours spare for sleeping!

AND I did the shrug last night. The new customer is delighted with that, so as soon as I get the new Bernina 1008 up in place of the little Brother Innovis 10A, I'll be able to get on with it and finish it off for quarter to nine tomorrow morning...
