Unusual Sewing Project

Anyone ever made a splint-cover for a dog's broken leg? My dog was hit by a car this week, and ended up with a broken bone in her foot and some bad cuts around the toe pads. Fortunately, it was no worse than that. The vet told me not to let her get the wrapping around the splint wet when she goes outside, and to tape a plastic bag around it when she goes out, and take the bag off indoors so she wouldn't perspire in it. Well, taping a bag on her leg didn't work very well, so I made a simple, plastic lined cloth bag with elastic casing at the top to slip over her leg. It worked quite well, but she fusses at having it pulled over her leg.

So tonight I tried another design with a zipper in the side, so it will not be tight going on. This one works better; it's a lot easier on the dog. And that was my ususual sewing challenge for this weekend. Hmmmm, wonder if there's a market for this kind of thing?

I think you are a wonderful pet owner and really admire your coming up to the challenge of helping your dog be comfortable. =20

What about making something like wrist supports, that people use for repetitive stress, with velcro that holds everything together? Then it can be put on one side of the leg, not over it. The velcro might hold it more securely as it's adjustable.

Many years ago our dog (who was only 6 months old at the time) was hit by a car, her hip was broken. The vet advised us to put her to sleep but my husband loved that dog and with the vets help we nursed her back to health. We set up a corner of a room with a plastic liner covered in straw bedding...also made a 'harness' that could help hoist her back end up from time to time for therapy. She came out of it fine.

You know-there just might be. I've never seen what you describe so you could do the patent research thing and see. I bet you could sell them to vets' offices with no problem. Couldn't hurt to check...

If there isn't, there ought to be - and for kids too!

Oh, poor dog! Give her a hug from me - I had a cat with a broken leg all last summer!

Poor pup. Several times over the years I've had dogs with bandages, casts or splints that had to be kept clean and dry. I just pulled the plastic bag/sleeve from the newspaper over the leg and held it in place with a large elastic band near the top. Not especially elegant, but it only had to stay on long enough to go for a brief "potty walk" out in the yard, the bags were free and disposable, too boot.

Well this weekend, with only 1/2 days notice, I was asked to make 2 free standing dummies to be used at the local rodeo. They were for the Bulls to charge and had to be made so that the bulls wouldn't be hurt!! The rodeo clown also had me make him a giant pair of red satin and purple lace panties and bra. They are used as a sight gag in part of his act. To me these were unusual sewing projects!! ......Amelia

Oh poor baby. What a good Doggy Mommy. When you take her back for her next check up, take the cover too. Show it to the vet and see what they think. If it were me, I'd tell them to give out my phone number (if you have a cell phone, you could give out that instead of your home number) to anyone who might need one. I bet you'd be surprised at how many folks would want that or something similar. There's lots of folks (like me lol) who view their pets as short people in fur suits rather than just animals. ;) (I'm betting you are in that group with me too. lol)

Give her an extra biscuit for me and tell her I'm so sorry she's feeling poorly.

I read "repairing" as "preparing" & thought someone was having a really busy weekend!

(Must be all those wedding-gown threads.)

Heard a story on the news and had to share it with you, Donna. A woman made some cast covers for one of her relatives when the relative had a broken leg (I think it was her leg, but do remember that the mind is the first to go.... lol) I think it was her sister-in-law that had the broken leg. When the patient went back to see her doctor (she had asked for the covers because the cast was so "ugly") she had the cover on the cast. The doctor was intrigued by it and she put the doc in contact with the woman that made them. She now owns her own business making these. They are being marketed by one of the big medical product companies that sells to doctors. She's gotten large enough now that she has several full time empolyees even!

Soo.....get on showing that cover to your vet! If people will buy them for people, they will buy them for their animals too. :) Honestly, I don't see why it wouldn't be as appealing, or as marketable.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll do that, after all. I was only half joking about selling them in my origional post, but you make it sound so possible, I might try it anyway. I don't expect to get rich, though. This is a very small town, so how many dogs with broken legs could there be at any one time?

And a big thank you to you, and all the others who have expressed concern about Jade (my dog). Jade is doing very well using only three legs, even follows me up and down the stairs or wherever I go. She goes to the vet on the 19th to have the stitches taken out and a plaster cast put on, so I'll bring in the cast cover when I bring her in.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Do you have a small pet store around you? Not a franchise, because they usually buy in bulk, but a privately owned one. They might have a market.

You're welcome. :) The thing to remember too, is that your vet knows other vets. And they know other vets. And they sometimes talk to each other. So if it takes off, don't be surprised if word gets around.

I'm so glad Miss Jade is getting around all right. Poor baby.

Keep us posted on what the vet thinks of the cover. (fingers crossed for you)
