velcro

Hi y'all! I'm trying to make my bad pups some belly bands so they don't announce their presence all over the house, if you get my drift... anyway, my new Simplicity Quilter's Classic sewing machine absolutely refuses to sew the velcro! The stitches all get fouled up, and the bobbin thread is a real mess! I've tried to sandwich it in tissue from a napkin, but that didn't help a great deal. Other than hand-sewing (yuck) does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

Is the problem that the Velcro isn't feeding and the stitches jam up? I get that at times and I've gotten into the habit of starting the stitch in the middle of the Velcro and sewing out to the edge. It feeds fine as long as it doesn't have to climb up the start of the Velcro.

Other than that, the only problem I have is with thread tension - some Velcro seems to generate a lot more friction than others and adjusting the tension allows the tread to be pulled tight.

Bigger needle and better thread.

Damn! You said it first! Oh, and try to sew on the tiny tape bit at the edge, not through the hooky bits! The loopy stuff usually sews just fine.

One more thing.... Please do not try to sew velcro that has the adhesive, self-stick back.....It does not sew, but makes a BIG mess... (My neighbor bought this recently (not really a sewist), and did it ever gum her machine up something terrible. The adhesive backed velcro is for applying to hard surfaces.

my .02 cents,
