which needle for metallic knit?

I found some slinky metallic knit fabric on clearance at Joann's and thought I'd make some pj pants for the DGDs but I've tried various needles and either skipping stitches or the needle is having to sort of punch through the fabric. It's some sort of polyester I think and has a shiny metallic looking design. I have several different colors and designs so I really need to figure out the correct needle to use.

So far I've tried ball point, metallica, embroidery, and universal. I'm open to any and all suggestions. Two grandaughters are having a birthday on the 21st and I wanted to get their pkg in the mail no later than Saturday morning.

I found my receipt and this fabric is called foil prt bodre, of course I know that's some sort of abbreviation but I think the prt would mean print, as in foil print? and bodre is out of my guessing range. Does this mean anything to anyone? It's a shiny glittery print on the slick and slinky knit fabric. I'll try different needles tomorrow when I can see better but I know someone has sewn with this, I just can't describe it very well.

Judie, Did you try a needle for stretch knits instead of ballpoint? Sometimes the package says for jersey knits. Juno

Juno,

Not yet, but I will go out and get some this evening. I think I've tried everything I have here.

Thanks!

I've posted a picture in case anyone else may have experience with sewing this type of fabric. I'm sure I can't be the only one trying to sew something from this slinky, shiny, fun stuff.

I found a needle that will work with this fabric without skipping. I'm using a quilting needle. It's the only thing I've tried that can actually get through this fabric and now I can finally get on with these pj pants.

Judie, I'm glad you found a needle that works for you. They are going to be the jazziest PJ's around Juno

I just looked at the picture. That is nasty stuff to sew. The shiny parts are glued on. Going through that fabric dulls the needle very quickly. The glue gums up the needle and thread until the thread breaks. I lubricate the thread with sewer's aid and clean the gum off the needle regularly with witch hazel (rubbing alcohol should also work). I've also been known to gently file damaged parts off the needle to avoid changing them quite so frequently, though the proper course is to change your needle very frequently when sewing this stuff.

Betsy,

Maybe this fabric is not the same as what you had. Once I found the right needle to use, it's been fairly simple. The metallic print doesn't seem to be glued and I've had no problems with the needle gumming up or with the thread breaking. I've made 3 pj pants so far, one in a shorter length with a gathered ruffle and 2 regular length with a blind stitched hem. I've had no problems finishing the seams with the serger either.

I did use a ball point needle to apply the fold over elastic at the waist but other than that, the quilting needle is just fine.

Yay!! you got them made. I'm really glad. There's nothing worse then having a time limit to get things made and have a needle mess you up. Post pictures of them, please. I bet they're really cute. Juno

Thanks for the hint on quilting needles. The elderly can always learn something new; I never would have thought of using them, but it does make sense when you think about it.

With 2 young DGDs, ags 7-months and 10-YO, I still have costumes, etc. to sew in the next few years, and I will definitely keep this in mind.

for asking! Not pictured is the pair I made for the 3 year old, they're the same as the lavender pair but size 4 instead of size 10. Judie

Judie,I just got home from another week on Cape Cod and got tosee the PJ"S. I have some DGD who would love them. I'll have to look for the material. where did you get it? As an aside, I spoke to one of my DGD's and the first thing she asked was if I was sewing. These little sweethearts keep my machine going. Juno

Juno,

I have been busy sewing and haven't had time to check the group much lately so I just saw your post. I found this fabric at Joann's of all places. I think most of it was in the red tag clearance and it still shows up every once in a while. I sometimes think they import their red tag clearance from somewhere other than the store as I have never seen most of it until it shows up in the red tag section. I did just see more during their Columbus day sale. My little ones just love this stuff!

Thanks for the information. I'll have to go down and take a look. I usually only get there about once a month, so I'll have to go a little more often I think and check out the red tag sales. Juno
