Building towards a dream

I think I'll stick to the chamber pot. I don't think I can deal with wearing a "diaper". Barbara Dream Master

The toilet in my downstairs bathroom is directly across from the front door. If someone comes up to the door and looks thru the window in the top of the door (you have to be on the tall side to do this) you will be looking right at the can. My house also sits 125 ft. back from the street. Almost no one ever comes over. So yesterday morning, I'm sitting on the pot, waiting for the dog to finish its business out back when I hear a knock on the door. I'm half asleep. I have not closed the bathroom door. I look up and there is someone looking right back at me. Oh, uh, er, I reached around and pulled the door closed while yelling "just a minute". Neither of us mentioned the view......... What I find funny is how well I can relate to it!

LOL this is so me... My bathroom is directly opposite the front door, which is open most of the time in the summer, with just a screen door. I can't tell you how many times I've rushed in and sat down, only to realize that BOTH doors are wide open and I'm looking right out onto the sidewalk! Then I just pray that no one walks by, because I can't reach the door from the toilet...

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Kalera Stratton :

which is exactly why my dad moved the door! he plastered over the original doorway and cut a door into a different part of the hall.

Once again something I said that was 90% joke and 10% making a point was taken entirely too seriously. But I still stand behind the concept that if *I* said I was going to hire an all-(insert any group here) crew, I would get some flack. And you would be surprised if you knew me as to how gender-color-orientation blind I am in my day to day life.

I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Ah, okay. I'm not sure I agree with that assessment, but since I have no hard data to offer...

There might be better ways of offering under-represented people more opportunities than favoring them when you choose the people to do particular tasks-for-hire.

Do you have a suggestion that you think would work better, with less appearance of exclusivity or prejudice, Louis? If so, I'd be happy to listen ... I'm always in search of things that work in the direction of -less- arbitrary favoritism.

No, I knew it was said it partial jest, but I wanted to clarify that I am by no means unilaterally in support of hiring women, and I sure as heck wouldn't be the person who gave you shit for hiring an all-male team! Though I agree that you woulkd get a lot of flak for it.

On a related note, I always hire prejudiiously... first, I hire people I know. If no one I know can do the job, I hire a friend of a friend. If no one has a friend that can do the job, I hire someone who did a good job for someone else... and etc.

And this is what I'll be doing here - I know the carpenter, and she knows some people she likes to work with, so I am going with that. As I don't know any electricians, HVAC experts, etc. I think this may work out well. And again, hiring an all-male crew would be nothing out of the ordinary - it's only remarkable when the polar opposite - an all woman group of tradespeople - is mentioned. Otherwise, I could almost guarantee you that the trades working on my studio would all b men.
