Class with Leah, Day One

OMG OMG OMG!!!! I MADE FLORAL BEADS! .... THUD!

Leah is an awesome teacher (but I knew that already). The class is fun, everyone else is/are fun too. I've been in classes that are so godawful serious but this is very light. And I made florals!!!! (Oh, I said that already didn't I?) We did a bicolor opalino bead with a silver foil wrap, more decoration, then flowers and vines. My hands finally get it.

Then we did (these are all after a demonstration from Leah) a transparent color base bead decorated with palladium then rolled in mixed frit, then decorated with a raked loop stringer (which I'd never done WITH stringer to rake), then MORE FLOWERS! (I'm on a roll now.) I have a whole new appreciation for heat control and sorta kinda miss my Minor. Tomorrow will be interesting since of course I want to do all this at home with my bigger torch. Any sonic booms heard in neighboring states will probably be me whining til I get it right. :0

Next Leah demonstrated two beads. The first was black with a spiral wrap of dichro (suspiciously similar to how my flutters start LOL...it was cool to say "oh I can already do that"), but THEN she decorated it with a complex latticino we'd already made and these amazing little ferns (more raked stringer, but WOW!). Finally she demonstrated a furrowed bead. I've tried them in the past and made a mess. Finally it clicked. And I discovered for the 59th time how much I love my little brass Stump Shaper.

It's only 6 here. I can't wait til class! For MORE, and to see my beads from yesterday. Woohooo!

More later, with pix.

Well it certainly sounds like your having fun I haven't taken a class yet, but maybe I'll conceder one now can not wait to see your new creations

Wow! I sure would love to be in that class with you! I can't *WAIT* to see what you've created!

Oooooooooooo! I'm so jealous! I'd love to take a Leah class!!

Karen, Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Can't wait to see your beads. Isn't Leah one of the sweetest people you've ever met? Patti

I just wanted to say a word about lampwork teachers. Like any other teacher (or human being) there are all kinds...and all kinds of students, too. I've had some bad teachers...but I've mostly been blessed with absolutely awesome teachers. (We had a discussion about that over lunch today. LOL) Leah is one of the BEST I've ever had.

Some classes are pricey, it all depends on when and where and even how you take them. I'm usually cautious about naming names but I'd gladly throw you a list of "way cool teachers" by email.

YES!!! Leah is an absolute sweetie! I've liked her since she gave me my first "narrative intro" to beadmaking 8 years ago. I'm soooo glad I could finally take a class from her. Talk about coming full circle!

It's been a long day and I'm dog tired. Last night I found out my Mom is having some problems. In a nutshell, internal bleeding that's yet to be figured out. She's severely anemic and went to the hospital today for a

2-unit whole blood transfusion. More testing tomorrow and Thursday. Please keep your fingers (or whatever you do) crossed. She's 75 years young and generally healthy so I'm not panicking (yet). But it added an extra worry today.

BUT....wow what a day! I've learned more about stringer control the last 2 days than I understood in the last 5 years (or more). Leah did a bead lottery for the demo beads she made today, so when I take pix tomorrow morning (promise!) I'll shoot her bead as well. Learned about casing, cool latticino and vessel handles. Can't wait to torch tomorrow.

G'night all!

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Karen_AZ" :

Oooh - getting goosebumps here reading this. My class with Leah is only

2 weeks away and I'm so excited. I have only 1 more thing to do to finish Phase One of my home studio, and will get that done before the end of the week, then Leah's class, then watch out world :-)

Oh Karen, how is your mom doing now?

I'm also crossing everything and putting her in my prayers

Your mom will be in our thoughts up here...

It's interesting to read about your adventures in glass class. Keep having fun!

Looks like my post disappeared. I too want to extend your Mom my best wishes.
