Washington DC has a room full of jars of "pickled babies". Also things like tatoo samples (embedded in Lucite or such), shrunken heads (Amazonian type), and the lower leg of a Civil War doctor, along with the cannonball that blew it off (the little card in the display told how he used to come and visit his leg...).<

Yep - that pretty much describes what it was like working in the pathology lab at Stanford for years. Fred and I would often talk "shop" at dinner at home but found that we grossed out nearly everyone else, LOL.

The ONLY thing that could drag me back to MedTrans now would be a hospital pathology or coroner's office job.

I've been to more than one science museum with this feature, to demonstrate stages of in-utero development.

I found them fascinating rather than revolting. But there were warnings posted at the entrance to the exhibit to discourage those who might be offended from going in.

(Re: "pickled babies") Ummm.... most of the "pickled babies" at AFIP were not exactly what one would put in an exhibit to demonstrate in-utero development. Unless you wanted to scare potential parents out of reproducing, by showing them all the things that can go wrong.... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

You'd like my friend Annie. She's in med school and she periodically refers to "her" cadaver.

Larry Thornhill will be teaching a week-long marble class at Appalachian Center for Crafts this summer. I highly recommend him. He teaches how to make small plants and insects and encasing them with a Stump sucker. I have one of his marbles with an octopus in it. Kind of like Paul Stankard or Richard Ayotte. As far as shattered marbles go, try using a regular Moretti punty. No need to use steel or boro. Also, what I do is hold the marble in the back flame where the sodium flare is just appearing. Then I put the marble under the table (while still on the punty) to see if there is still any heat glow. If the center is too hot it will cause the marble to slump in the kiln. I have had several marbles turn into mini-paperweights because of that. When the glow is gone, grab the marble with loop hemostats and knock off the punty. Then fire polish the punty mark and place into the kiln. As far as graphite vs. cherry, I don't see any real difference in the finished product. They both leave chill marks that have to be flame polished out. Cherry will go out of round if you are not careful though. The mold is really just to check for roundness. You put very little pressure on it. Try making a marble without using a mold, just balance the glass and turn it. The surface tension will make it spherical.
