Well, if you go by *the book*, it's 16", but I am a fairly normal weight (a size 6-8), and that is always way too long for me. I usually make mine about 14", and on that length, a pendant will fall just to the hollow of my neck.

Checked with a friend, she's also a size 6, wears hers between 13-15".

HTH! :o)

"Standard" length for a choker is 16", but 19-year-olds tend to be rangy. If you make it adjustable from 14" to 16", it should fit her now and still work once she gets her adult body shape.

Note that "choker" is not the same thing as "dog collar". I think of a choker as something that hits just at the base of my neck, right above the collarbones. If I want it to go tight and straight across my neck, I have to make it shorter; that's what I call a dog collar.

As Celine mentions, part of your answer depends on definition.

If you're talking about a necklace going straight across the throat (like a "dog collar), it's 14 inches If you mean a necklace that sits right at the bottom of your neck with the center bead in the hollow of your neck, it's about 16". A necklace 18" will hang just at or below your collar bone.

That's pretty standard. From there you go on to the individual. Most young women, having firmer skin, wear the shorter lengths better than soft skinned older me. And unless they are swimmers or weight lifters they won't have well developed neck and shoulder muscles that require a larger size, so their measurements will be a little smaller usually.

Keep in mind that unless she gave you a measurement, multiple lengths will work. EG, 15 inches (for me a tight dog collar) would probably fit her as a base of the neck choker. If she's very thin, it might fall just at/below the collar bones. More likely it will fit at the base of the neck, and if she's muscular or large it might fit as a dog-collar type choker.
