Cleaning Silver

I thought you folks might have some words of wisdom on this.

I have a few sterling chains with pendants (of course they're beads!). A couple of them had tarnished pretty badly, especially on the back part of the chain where it touches my neck. The untarnished part is white/silver bright, but the tarnished part is almost black. So I got out my tub of Wright's Silver Cleaner and used that.

It didn't work well at all. Almost none of the tarnish was removed. I had several thoughts:

  1. It isn't silver?
  2. Wright's isn't a good cleaner?
  3. Wet creams aren't the right way to clean chains?

Any advice for me?

I've been using a non-abrasive toothpaste for cleaning, followed by a silver polishing cloth for shine.

My jewelry teacher recommended the salt-solution method; she uses it all the time to clean items up before a show. Nolly

Thanks so much for posting that link Nollya, I'll give it a shot tonight. I was labelling some of my items last night and I was surprised by how tarnished some of the findings were :S I guess it doesn't take long at all.

Best, Christine
