Did you catch this?

Yesterday I got a Fire Mountain Gem catalog update and while just skimming it I found some things that really jumped out at me. Now, don't get me wrong...I've bought from them for items I know well enough, but I'd be leery of buying say, gemstones because I don't know enough to know if the info is accurate or not after seeing what I'm seeing today.

What I'm talking about is, they stated that the artisans that made the 'designer glass beads' (which actually look ok in the picture) train up to 6 months and each bead can take an HOUR to make. Then you look at the prices and they're $1.50-$2.75 for a package of 10. So let's see,

10 beads = 10 hours = $2.75 Would that be 27 cents an hour pay? Hm. Maybe that's enough to live on in other parts of the country. You also would think that if a bead took an hour to make, one would take a few seconds to clean out the bead release that is obvious in some of the photos. Also, if one of those beads took an hour to make, they need better training.

Second, another Handmade Glass Bead section lists "Each bead is made using traditional lampwork techniques" whatever that means. But where the pricing box is they say, "All porcelain beads priced the same". Am I wrong or is porcelain a clay process? (The raku thread reminded me of this).

::sigh:: end of rant.

I bought gemstones from them once. I learned my lesson. The stuff in their catalog bears little/no resemblance to what you get. The places on Sooz's list have nicer beads for less money. (In every case)

The beads aren't made in the US, and the laborers are children or slave laborers. We go through this discussion every so often, and I had almost your same rant (although that catalog said each bead took

5 hours to make)

The bead release is plain old unfired clay, from what I've seen. I suspect that the bead release our R.C.B. lampworkers use is a lot better stuff. Also, the beads in the FMG catalog are not annealed - and cleaning out the bead release would cause a huge amount of breakage and subsequent loss of income for the factory makers.

Porcelain is a clay process. Heaven only knows why they're calling lampworking and porcelain the same thing.

See, Lori -- I don't buy from FMG. You're stating some of the many reasons I don't shop there. I don't even bother looking.

Because they engage in FALSE ADVERTISING. I absolutely hate FMG. With a passion. I won't buy from them, ever, because of their unethical practices. And they can sue me all they want for saying this in public - I don't care. My distaste runs deep on this one.

::sigh:: Sometimes I can be dense and not want to see the truth the first time I read it. It's gotten through to me now though.

Lori, we all need to learn things for ourselves. I'm the same way.

People can tell us stuff til they're blue in the face, but we are a stubborn species, and things don't often penetrate until we have reason to see them that way -- through our own experience. Isn't it true?

They can't sue you for saying that... they can only threaten to sue you, which is an unethical form of bullying that would only prove your point.
