FYI scanner that is bad for bead scans

Thought I might save others some trouble, I bought an HP PSC 1610 and it's the worst I've seen for bead scans. Anything that's not right flat on the glass is very fuzzy and distorted. Unfortunately I used the printer a couple of times before discovering this. I've had other HP scanners that did fine but they are no longer available and this model is quite different, here's a scan from it if you want to see. Most of the bead images at my website are scans from my previous model and they are not like this. I downloaded the latest drivers etc.

The only other thing I can think is that maybe something is not working on this particular one. Does anybody else have this model? Ingrid

Hi Ingrid,

I have an HP Scanjet 2300C, particularly recommended as able to scan 3D objects. Not all flatbed scanners are created to handle them. It's not the drivers/software, but the mechanics. I can't explain it myself, but I had spent quite a bit of time researching it a couple of years ago; something to do with field depth, or something.

Here's a bracelet I did on my scanner -

Something you might try (that I read about but never tried myself, so I don't know how well it will work) is suspend the object above the glass, not directly on it. You need some kind of box where you can hang the image from the "roof" of the box above the glass. IIRC, the box should be black/dark color so no light gets through to the glass around the object being scanned. Good luck for a fix :)

Cheers, Carla
