I'm starting to think that "someone" has got it in for me (partially OT)

I've been moaning for a while that my shoulder was hurting when I was attempting to quilt anything bigger than a wall hanging, but it seemed to wear of pretty fast when I stopped and I only got the occasional ache at other times. It was enough to worry me before my hip surgery (November) that I wasn't going to cope with crutches, but I seemed to do ok, then about a month after I stopped using them I started to get quite a lot of discomfort in my ribs just below my shoulder blade and it would spread to the neck and shoulder itself.

Chiropractic treatment sorted the ribs out and I expected the other stuff to ease off too, but it didn't, so the chiropractor recommended a physical therapist to me and I went to her for the first time about

3 weeks ago, it's taken a bit of time to fully assess things, simply because it's so complex, but finally on Friday she did some tests that indicated something called a labral tear in my shoulder (it's a ring of cartilidgy type tissue on the shoulder blade that helps hold the main arm bone in place).

I'm a bit freaked out because it was the equivalent in the hip that was one of the things sorted out in that surgery, I'm freaked out a bit more because I've not injured my shoulder to my knowledge, so it's a little worrying that my tissue is so fragile I can do bad stuff to it and not realise. What is most distressing is just how painful this is, I've done quite a few different pains in my time and bad ones, even the worst my hip was (which was BAD), I could find a position where I could lie still, apply heat or ice and take strong stuff and most of the time, even if it didn't go away and it would come back again if I dared to go to the toilet or anything, I could manage moderate comfort and be able to read a book, or do something. With this shoulder that seems impossible, I can lie flat on my back with pillows under my knees, to avoid it making anything else hurt, but even lieing like that I can't overcome the pain, because even breathing hurts and should I want to attempt not to get bored out of my mind that's been banned by the powers that be and should I want to do something crazy like sleep, if pain allows it, I've never been able to fall asleep flat on my back and as luck would have it, this is the right shoulder, when it was my left hip that had surgery and even though that is mostly pain free, it won't permit me to lie on it for more than about 30 seconds.

I'm stunned how fast this has developed from an achy shoulder to pretty much everything being exceedingly painful, I was just starting to pull ideas together for a lone star quilt and even made a paste up of one section and have it stuck on the wall with all the cutting instructions I worked out. I cut a couple of strips on Thursday night and realised it was a bad idea, put a new blade in, so it was as good as possible, was only doing two layers, but after a couple more it was a no go - I can see managing to sew, I usually direct the fabric with my left hand anyway, but if I can't cut, then that's going to be a bit pointless. I managed to get an appointment with a specialist on Wednesday, but I don't know how much of an opinion/prognosis etc they'll be able to give until I get some imaging done.

I was just starting to get into the quilting groove again after a blip for other reasons. I bought a new quilt book today and I really want to have a good look at it, but I can only manage to look at if for a couple of minutes at a time! I'm booked to go on retreat the first weekend in June, which right now looks a bit crazy!

I shouldn't complain too much about the lack of sleep, I've been taking sleeping tablets for ages, as I have narcolepsy, I pop a pill to go to sleep at night and one to wake up in the morning, it may actually compound the problem though as I don't wake up as reliably if I do turn into a bad position, though I am mostly waking up pain free, so that isn't usually happening, but this morning I did wake about 4am in pain, it's probably good that I woke up and with my pills for waking me up I probably don't feel it as bad as some people and I'm also used to not sleeping or feeling as if I'm not sleeping. It was the doom and gloom of being awake this morning that bothered me much more than tiredness as a consequence.

Thanks for your kind words, I really must go to sleep now as I have PT at 7.30am.

Thanks :-), irony is, my mum broke her shoulder about a month ago, whilst she was staying with us, now I'm jealous of her as painful though her break is, the prognosis is much better, I''d love to put my arm in a sling and have a 90% chance of being fine in 6 weeks, plus, she did her left and with me it's my right, we're both right handed! Would you believe I had surgery on my left shoulder 7 years ago, you'd think someone could have at least "blessed" me with this on the same side as the previous problem! Just taking the time to reply really helps, I'm still in the phase of being stunned that this is happening, I think I'd be less bemused if I'd actually done something specific, if I'd falled down the stairs, I could curse that I'd done that, maybe not curse at least grump about it! I should probably take up extreme sports, if I'm going to do bad stuff to myself just existing I might as well have some fun whilst I'm at it, anyone for a parachute jump?

Cheers Anne

Anne, I'm so sorry to hear that you're having such a problem -- it does seem unfair, when you've only just gotten the other situation taken care of. I hope you'll find some relief soon.

Thanks, gentle is good! My husband lent over in bed to touch me this morning, I wasn't even sure whether he was awake and whether it was a concious touch, or just brushing against me in his sleep, I said careful, very quietly and gentle, what I meant was, if you are awake, I'd like a hug, just a careful one, he was awake and took it as "hands off", but I talked to him later and he knows what I meant! I'd love some audio books! Slight problem is that the computer I'm currently using doesn't have a CD drive, it has a large hole! So I can't either play them from this computer, or use it to transfer to another device. I have quite a few already, but no way of listening to them. I'm campaigning for an ipod, I think DH would happily buy me a Zune (the microsoft version, so we get it cheap). They have enough storage on these days that I could transfer my whole collection on to one. I listen to podcasts quite a bit too, it would be nice to have them on a little device rather than having to move to the computer each time, I could just download them each day. Need to research and see if a Zune actually would be ok! Cheers Anne

so do I, I'm not very positive right now, because I think I've had this to some extent for years and I can't figure out what has flared it up and even the amount I've restricted myself, it's still getting worse not better, so I'm not holding out much hope for rest, modification, PT etc. But surgery scares the heck out of me, I suspect I may try a cortisone shot in the very short term, to try and get some relief whilst I think about the options, but I'm not keen on them, to the extent I've lost count of the number I've been offered, yet never actually had one, we've got halfway through the procedure a couple of times, but I don't go numb very easily and the only time they've actually got a needle into a joint (it was for die not cortisone), it was so darn unpleasant, getting me anywhere near that point again might be challenging. I'm not quite sure if they'll need to do die in the joint for tests with this, I suppose if they do, I'll discuss doing cortisone at the same time as with my hip, we never discussed that and the radiologist then mentioned he did it sometimes and I think he would have been within his remit to prescribe and give that, but I couldn't make a decision that fast and the aftermath of the die was so unpleasant, I never had the courage to try the cortisone shot.

Cheers Anne

Thanks, Sandy, it is rather frustrating. I have this theory that surgery comes in pairs, I had knee and shoulder surgery in 2001, then

2 surgeries in 2004, I was thinking when I had my hip done in November that what else would crop up...I hope this doesn't need surgery, but the PT seems to think it's likely.

Cheers Anne

Anne: Shoulder injury is known to cause extreme pain. It can really knock one for a loop, even if 'accustomed to the pain of injury in other body parts. I've heard very stoic athletes agree on this. After the full course of the therapy, ask the PT about prescribing a series of exercise in the gym so you can strengthen and improve the situation. I did not know that the first time I hade PT, and relapsed fairly quickly. The second time I followed up with the exercises on the gym machines. I did this about 5 times a week. That made all the difference! One must be single minded about this and continue through the boredom and inconvenience! Meantime, I'll say a prayer for your recovery.

Well I'm glad to hear that others have had this magnitude of pain! Funny thing is, having injured and had surgery on my other shoulder, that really wasn't that painful, different injury I suppose, doing certain things was very painful, so it was obvious what not to do, but once that calmed down and it was only a fairly narrow set of things that were a problem, having surgery or not was a tough decision, in the end it was only not being able to hold a friend baby that made me decide I would have it. The surgery itself was also not particularly painful, I think I only took tylenol once or twice afterwards, my neck was more of a problem from the sling. The recovery was hard work though, it took heading towards a year to raise my hand above shoulder height. I'm a veteran PT client, so I'm well aware of the need to have a continuing exercise program, I'm also particularly prone to developing muscle imbalances really fast, I managed to loose all the muscles in my bum over about a month, beginning about 2 months ago and I still haven't figured out how, I just realised that I did and went straight back to the PT to get a program for them, rehabing from hip surgery you expect to be assymetrical, but when I got in for that appointment, I was symmetrical and strong on all the other leg muscles and nothing there, it was very bizarre.
