update -- partially OT and rather long

I'll get the OT -- and most important -- part explained first. MIL has been in the hospital, as I wrote previously, with a broken hip, broken shoulder, and four broken ribs. DH went to see her (almost seven hours driving each way) the first weekend, and he was pretty worried about her. However, he had to come home to begin his radiation treatments (they're not for a life-threatening reason). He didn't plan to go back this past weekend, but things change. My quilting buddy arrived here from Phoenix on Thursday and, within minutes, DH came racing in the door to say that he'd had word from various relatives that things weren't going well, so he flew out that evening. I stayed here with my guest at DH's request.

As the weekend wore on, DH and his brother and sister began making funeral arrangements, as they'd been told that time was short; hospice was going to come make an evaluation early this week. DH came home Saturday to get things arranged here for a longer absence, and then yesterday we learned that MIL had "snapped out of it"! She was no longer hallucinating, she knew who everyone was, she was talking coherently, and she was able to get out of bed and sit in a chair. :O Talk about miracles! :D Needless to say, we're all delighted, though we're also a bit in shock.

To add a bit of *on topic* stuff to this, my guest and I attended a lecture on Thursday evening given by Jennie Rayment. We'd previously taken several classes from her one summer at camp, and neither of us wanted to miss a chance to see her again; besides, I needed some laughter by that time. Saturday we took her Cosmic Happenings class, and it was *wonderful*. All attendees accomplished a lot and had fun doing so. I finished two blocks in class and made a further two yesterday. Now I need to figure out the sizes of the border blocks to finish this top. The first two blocks are pictured on my blog.

Happy to hear about your MIL being better! So nice you could get together with your friend to take a quilting class. Barbara in FL

It's amazing how fast their conditions can change, one way or the other. With my mom a couple of years ago at age 87, in the hospital with shingles as well as an intestinal problem, we figured she'd have to go to a nursing home. As soon as they took her off so many meds, some of which were for pain, she was back to herself again! I was amazed at the difference. Now she's 89 and living alone in a house with a big yard and still doing all her own housework and yard work, and going up and down stairs on her own.
