Jamie update 8/25

unfortunately, the surgeon was called out of the office for emergency surgery on the day of her appointment, so he hasn't actually seen HER yet. but we were able to leave her films with him, and he is sending the films back with a letter detailing his opinions/suggestions/options with them for her and the Navy.

the first thing the surgeon said, when he looked at her films was: she has a herniated disk. depending on his interview with her later, she will need either fusion OR laminectomy and diskectomy. he is willing to do the surgery for her - she just has to convince the Navy that it would be better done by a civilian. that shouldn't be hard, at this point in time, since so many of their surgeons are overseas right now.

they have openings in their schedule for next month. according to his office manager, they don't want people in pain any longer than necessary. they will have her here for two or three days prior to surgery, 2 - 5 days in the hospital [depending on which surgery they decide on], and then whatever recovery time is needed here with me where i can take care of her until she is cleared to return to active duty.

i have to say, i was TOTALLY impressed by his staff, which is rare for me. and there were patients in his office from all over the country.

it has been SO good to have her home, and be able to help in a positive way.

and the CA State Fair, yesterday, was HOT, exhausting, and great as always!

Nope both Larry's and mine were cervical (in the neck). Check with the doctor's office to see if she'll need a truss, though. My FIL wore one for quite a while after similar surgery.

Oh yes, most insurance includes some amount of durable medical equipment, so if she needs a hospital bed or wheelchair while she's recovering, just ask the discharge coordinator at the hospital. Mine took care of everything -- I didn't even need to make a phone call. Everything was delivered before I was released from the hospital, and I just called to have it picked up when I was done with it.

Well, it is a big red scar across my throat. Maybe they just don't have any filters, and what pops into their heads comes out of their mouths. It doesn't bother me any -- I make up some really amusing lie and laugh my butt off afterward.

After my auto accident, while my face was still barely recognizable as a face, I got my income tax return check. My brother took me to the bank to cash the check, since I was barely walking, and nowhere near ready to drive again. The teller, not even looking over the counter, automatically said, "Can I see some picture ID?"

I handed her my driver's license, which looked not one thing like the person in front of her with the broken nose, eye sewn shut and 900 stitches in her face. She glanced up to compare the license with the person, gasped and stepped back.

When she was able to speak, she asked "Who beat you like that?"

By this time, my brother, being my brother, was laughing hysterically. I explained that I had gotten on the wrong side of a Mack Truck, but that she could rest assured that the photo really was one of me.

Visibly shaken, she counted out my money and gave it to me. I'd bet she had a real story to tell her family that night after work.

Good on them. This point alone is enough to make me feel you've got hold of a good thing.
