Loom Beading

Can a loom pattern be done off loom with the same or similar look? I ran across a book called The Little Coin Purse by Carol Devlin but it says it's for the loom. I don't have a loom and would rather try using a different stitch to accomplish the same piece of work.

Sure, there's a stitch called square stitch whose finished product looks remarkably like loom work.

Yeah but you don't have the fun of loom. (just kidding)

I'm a loom junky, but I'm learning off loom too.

Is it a small purse. If it is might I make a suggestion. This is were the jury rigged bit comes in. Take a piece of strong thick card. Cut some small slots in top and bottom of card. Roughly 1/8 inch apart .Cut your threads fasten them to the back of the card with a drawing/press pin. Put them through the slots in the card and fasten the threads at the other end of the card back pulling them tight . Slip a two pieces of card under the thread at the top and bottom of the right side. This will lift the threads up for you to get the beads under.

I taught a class to make bracelets this way. Saved them the cost of a loom. Shirley
