My first bead memory

*Lsorta*

And *I* am trying to get over the fact that I just recently discovered that several members of the group are from the Chicagoland area and now I am moving away...

Throw in Louisville, Bloomington IN and Milwaukee and see what happens! I've been reading the info on the bead show in Milwaukee with a blend of nostagia, envy and homesickness. My sis is coming over from near Milwaukee this summer for a visit, but it may be some time before I get back over that way to the US.

There's someone here who lives just a few miles from me. The person mentioned their city one day, and I thought it was a strange coincidence. Then another time they mentioned their street name here. I was surprised! Its actually the same zip code.

That's as bizzarre as the time I was on the phone with a customer when I worked at Rejuvenation here in Portland OR... the retail end mind you, we didn't do mail order calls so this was a fluke... and as he gave me his address it dawned on me that he had lived ACROSS THE STREET from me in Oakland.

Chuck Driver of Blue Heeler has a sister in Fairbanks who doesn't know what to do with the beads she's gotten. She lives about a mile away. Down the hill, over to the school, and take a left. And she had looked at the house next door when it was on the market last fall. We will meet soon.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Kathy N-V :

]Later, I learned that Camp Fire Girls got a vest, and the beads were attached ]in various complicated patterns.

boy, did my oldest get into THAT one. i think i still have her vest and a lot of extra beads that never made it to the "sewing on" part, as that was about the time Jamie and Johnny were born!

]Lo and ]behold, it didn't look all that hard -- so I got myself some tools, and some ]inexpensive beads, and took a shot at it. And here I am, making beautiful ]things for my own enjoyment *and* getting to sell them to other people as well!

bingo - me, too. all those years of 'other' crafts must have made me susceptible.

the first beads I owned were evil eye beads. my mother's side of the family comes from cyprus, and for as long as I can remember, my Nene (grandmother) has kept me well supplied with evil eyes of all shapes and sizes. Some were just plain, round blue glass or plastic beads..much like a small pony bead, and lacking the typical eye spots. others were the typical round, flat-ish blue glass ones with the round white iris and black pupil dot in the middle. I had necklaces, bracelets, rings, and keyrings all adorned with them. I had loose ones that I kept in little boxes. Every time she took a trip to cyprus, she'd bring back little bags filled with evil eyes, and always made sure I had one to wear.

I still have a great many evil eye beads, fancy and plain (my fanciest is a truly hideous one that's shaped like a proper eye and edged with small, real diamonds..I never wear it, it's so ugly), and my Nene still brings them back from cyprus and still makes me take a few every time I go visit her.

as far as regular beads go, I always had a lot of those when I was little. I can remember happily stringing cheap plastic beads on yarn and sewing thread when I was a kid. I also used to make little dolls and robots out of beads and wire. I still have some of the bead dolls, but none of the robots, sadly..I loved those the most, so I carried them around with me a lot, which was probably why they all ended up getting lost or broken.

I know what my first bead memories are! It finally came back to me. It was right here on RCB. Yep! I was thinking about making a few beaded things and came across this newsgroup. Then I signed up for classes and now I'm lampworking. It's all your fault! And I couldn't love you any less for it!

The proper phrase (in my house at least) is "Bite my Shiny Metal Ass."

DD says "Tushie," to avoid parental wrath. Yes, we know we have double standards, and no, we don't care.

We are big fans of the now defunct animated series, "Futurama."

When you were a baby, did she pin them to your clothes? My sister-in-law's family does that - evil eyes and little medals of the Blessed Virgin. I knew better than to question it.

Bob's mom used to believe in mysticism that involved lighting a special candle on Christmas Eve to remove any curses you had built up during the year. She tried to explain it to me a couple of times, but I started laughing and got smacked instead.

She did have one odd belief that I thought was great - a pregnant woman's every whim must be satisfied immediately, or the child will have birthmarks. Her "proof" was that a cousin was born with a birthmark shaped like an Italian cookie because his mother was unable to obtain them during her pregnancy. (You can stop laughing now)

Unfortunately, I was so nauseated during my pregnancy with DD that I had no cravings - perhaps she should have had a birthmark shaped like an IV, since I spent so much time in the hospital getting rehydrated.

Kathy N-V

P.S.: No birthmarks on me, DD has a teeny brown spot on her forehead. Maybe I wanted a freckle or something.

I don't remember my first beads - but I've always been attracted to shiny pretties too. I can remember looking at my Mom's costume jewelry and I had a great Aunt that had fabulous goodies.

My Mom got me into beading - my first beading/jewelry was for a 4-H competition - I used some plastic beads, wooden beads, sequins, buttons etc and made bracelets and necklaces. I know I still have at least one of the bracelets - might have to hunt around for the necklaces!

You ever get the "bite me" beads made? I haven't done the PMC ones yet. hmmmmmmm.

No no no not a freckle. It's a bead

I did get them made and they were ugly. But it was an ugly time. I still have them. I did the bite me beads in Japanese as well. Maybe I'll do some more.

Duh, I'm finally catching up a bit on the group and just realized you must be in the UK.

That is so cool!

How did you end up there?

(Too bad we never met since I'm involved in two out of the three of your past places ;) ).

What's funny is that I've always had a strong creative streak -- but until now, it has always manifested in words or music. I can write poetry (and a little prose, mostly fanfic); I can filk, I can sing well enough for my own enjoyment and that of my friends. But I never had any pull toward the visual arts at all until this happened. So it's really new and different for me!
