My first bead memory

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from snipped-for-privacy@mindCHEMISEspring.com (Lee S. Billings) :

]What's funny is that I've always had a strong creative streak -- but until now, ]it has always manifested in words or music. I can write poetry (and a little ]prose, mostly fanfic); I can filk, I can sing well enough for my own enjoyment ]and that of my friends. But I never had any pull toward the visual arts at all ]until this happened. So it's really new and different for me!

ditto to the creative streak - but the only thing musical i've ever done is to learn to play the guitar. most concerts are ruined for me, because i have an uncanny ability to pick out the one instrument out of tune with the others, and that's all i will hear. but how to get it right? no way - i even have trouble tuning my own guitar! i started writing some children's books at one time - i think they're still in a file somewhere [mainly because publishers want to pick their own person to do illustrations, and i already knew who i wanted to do the illustrations.]

but my grandmother started me out at an early age with handcrafts. first embroidery, then sewing, then quilting and tatting and crocheting. from there, i picked up cross-stitch and needlepoint. and then one day i saw cross-stitch done with seed beads added . . .

when i took a job about 10 years ago, one of the other employees made jewelry. she always wore it for a couple of weeks, and then put it up for sale in her office. from then on, i was hooked. but i didn't find out about lampwork until i came here . . . and Tink and Lynda and Nicole are to blame for everything else. now, i'm just learning as fast as i can . . . both in school, here, and at the rock club. i still love using "stones and minerals" in my jewelry, but there's just something about glass . . .

I don't remember if she used to pin them on my clothes or not..I do remember her telling me to always wear one, though. when I was little I'd always wear one of the blue beads and the little glass eyes on a chain around my neck. I don't always wear one now, but as I was raised in the belief of it, I'm still superstitious enough to wear one in situations where I think I might need one, or around certain people who tend to have jealous or hateful personalities. when I have a house of my own, I'll hang one above the front door. I also usually do have one with me, even if I'm not wearing it.

The candle sounds like another ritual we used to do when I was a child. It involved burning olive leaves (which my Nene also obtained from cyprus..some had been blessed by a Hoji, which is a holy man), moving from room to room so the smoke could carry away and cleanse any ill luck or curses. After the rooms had all been cleared, we'd then circle the smoke three times round our heads, and once down our faces to cleanse ourselves. we'd have to recite a small blessing/prayer of protection in turkish while doing so. It's something I haven't done in years, but my mother used to do it on the last day of the year, so the new year would start off free of any lingering bad luck.

and as for freckles..well..I have tons. I didn't get the olive skintone, but freckles I got in abundance. I even have three that form an almost perfect triangle on my neck, and another three that go in a line down the inside of my left forearm. my boyfriend once threatened to play connect the dots with a sharpie one night while I'm sleeping.

I suppose it's fitting, though..my name is amber, after all, so I guess my many freckles could be considered as being my "inclusions".

Yup, the weather here is definitely on the cool side! :-)

Bad companions! Actually, I'm married to an Englishman. I met him while I was living on a boat lent to me by some friends for a get-away-from-life period of my life.

Funny how that works, eh? I'm hoping to get back to the Milwaukee area in the next year or so, depending on finances. I have a grandson I've not seen yet and two daughters I miss. Love makes you do funny things. I used to be really active in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) but now that I live in the land of castles I never play dress-up any more! Life's funny like that.

I just recently got into HP fic, since I wasn't a fan of the books. But most of the stories I've read have been set with the characters in their late teens, or post-Hogwart's.

Huh. I knew there were a fair number of fen here, but I think you're the first person who's mentioned the SCA. I used to be fairly active also, but local politics and the vicissitudes of life have pretty much gafiated me. Did you ever go to Border Raids?

I'm so new to the world of fanfic that I've never made it to a convention. If I ever hear of one hapening in my area that focuses on of the fandoms I prefer, I am So there!

I have Got to read your marysue! I'm not one of those who thinks marysues are completely wrong..some of my favorite fics are marysues, actually.

Oh, many times did I go to Border Raids, being a Midrealm denizen. There was the time that the then-king *name deleted (G)* followed in my ex's footsteps through the grass when he heard someone mention the cottonmouth in the swimming pool. I used to play down in that region back when Kain and Elissa were still very active in Meridies. Ahhh the memories. And Pennsic! Don't get me started about Pennsic!

I've had the offer to go to an event or two in castles but they were at inopportune times. I'm sure there will come a time when I'll need to whip up something Tudor and tack a few thousand beads on it.

Maybe it's time for me to do the PMC bite me pendant - I've been in a bite me mood lately.

Wow! I had forgotten all about them! When we moved up to Sierra Madre I was 7. They had a Camp Fire Girls chapter there. I joined and over the years acquired tons of beads. Somewhere, In some box that gets moved and never unpacked each time I move, there is a vest covered with assorted shapes and colors of wooden Camp Fire beads. I kind of hope I run across them in the next few days while I'm sorting what's in the boxes. It would be interesting to see what "wonderful" designs I came up with back then.......... I don't know you terribly well yet, Candace, but I'd have to say that's a very Candace introduction to beads...... ~~ Sooz

Mine too! My paternal grandmother was a gorgeous Russian woman who loved "lady" things. I got most of my sense of being feminine from her. I loved dressing up in her costume jewelry, lipstick, and petticoats. I still have some of her stuff (though not the lipstick).

But I think my first bead memory has to be pop beads -- those beads that linked together and could be pulled apart, >POP!< We had them in the 50s, and I'm sure every generation has had some version of them since then. ~~ Sooz
