New Photos

There are a bunch of new photos with my work in my public photoalbum. Take a peek: comments, suggestions, compliments, and winning lottery numbers are all welcome. Hateful, mean stuff can go to my alter-ego: dev/null.

Love than golden twisty necklace. And great barrels and round in jade. And that Thai amber is so satisfying.

Nice work, Kathy.

I'm supposed to stop beading at the least twinge of pain. And I've been doing so, even when I'm _this close_ to finishing something. That spiral necklace took me three evenings, instead of my normal half an evening for something like that.

I'm now allowed to pick up items that are under 10 lbs, up from five. So, that's good. I took off my collar for an hour this evening to wash it and to take a shower, and I could feel the bone graft (ewww), and there was a fair amount of pain going down the back of my spine and down my arm. That's not a good sign, so I'll call the neurologist on Monday. Maybe it's normal to feel that stuff when the collar first comes off, I just don't know.

Right now, I'm feeling the slightest twinge of pain, so I stopped the project I was working on. (I'm sorry, grammar be damned, I just can't say ,"The project upon which I was working." It makes me feel as if I could vomit upon my person.)

I have a whole slew of crappy garnet beads that were supposed to be briolettes (hah!) but look more like watermelon seeds than anything else. I strung and braided them, with a big hunky piece of Hill Tribe silver as the focal. The item looks so much nicer than the parts -- I think I bought the garnet strands for about a buck apiece. I'm tempted to remake the piece, take photos at each step, and put it up on a web page. The necklace looks that nice, or it will when I finish it tonight.

Now that I'm off the sleeping pills, I've turned into either a Vampire or a baby. My days and nights are totally mixed up, and I will be going to bed at about 9 a.m. The sleep clinic says that going to bed early and trying to sleep will not help me reset my sleep clock. What they want me to do is to stay up one hour later each day, sleep exactly eight hours, and then get up. After X amount of days, I'll be going to bed at a normal time, in theory.

Anyway, you get to listen to my "up all night blathering." But, I really am following all the doctors' orders, because I am highly motivated to get better.

ah - okay - that part happened while i was away. that's progress, at least, although i know it's not what YOU want.

i meant to mention that one - it almost looked braided, in the picture. very nice!

yeah, well, i've heard that theory too. if it works, let me know. i end up awake most nights and cat-napping during the day, when i'm lucky. my biological clock has always been screwy, but lately it's insane.

GOOD! you're still in my prayers!

Jamie goes next week with her MRIs and all the pictures they have of her to get a second opinion on whether she has to have spinal surgery.

**sigh** and she's not yet 21. Mama is not a happy camper.

Dearest Kathy,

I'm so happy you're able to share these pictures of your latest pieces. I really like Tante Lia's necklace, and I'm not much for browns. The faux lariat is lovely, but your new little companion with his sweet face really takes the cake.

I haven't said thanks lately for sharing your stories lately, but Thank You! I may be a lurker, but I always keep a sharp eye out for your writings.

I like it, too .... and was thinking how well it would work with some components I have. Are you willing to share the instructions? Are they visible online somewhere, or simple enough for a verbal description?

TIA.

I modify it (surprise, surprise). For this necklace, the inner core is made of 6/0 mixed bronze beads and the outer is 8/0 A/B Rootbeer S/L. Each station is the length of my "driving" finger apart. Because of the disparity in bead sizes, I use 5 outer beads for each core bead. To put in the stations, I just stop the spiral, drop in the accent beads, then restart as if I were beginning again.

This particular necklace tends to take a beating, so I use doubled Power Pro for the main stitch, and run an additional length of line through the "spine" when I'm done. If you are going to reiforce the necklace, making sure you have core beads with large holes is essential.

Sometimes I make the spiral with gemstone chips in place of one of the outer beads (one core, two outer, gemstone chip, two outer - as the repeat). It comes out very earthy looking, and nothing like the basic spiral.

It's all wonderful, but I like the Thai amber and Tante Lia's necklace the best! :)

Play with it. I sometimes fid that you can't add a gemstone chip on every repeat because it gets too heavy. Depending on the size of the beads and the chips, I usually add a chip every third repeat.

BTW, Chips and teardrop beads and Matagamas all need to be used with the larger seed beads, 6/0s and 8/0s. When I've tried using them with 11/0 beads, it just doesn't work.

thanks for the hints! i've got everything printed out to play with.

and i don't have much in the way of 11s . . . most of my needles won't go through them!

Ah, the basic spiral instructions are familiar, and I have done several necklaces on that theme. But I like your variations, and will have to try them out. Thanks muchly.
