Oddball question

Is it possible to want to sell jewelry JUST to sell jewelry? Not for money, or regocnition, or accolades, but just to sell it? And yes, I'm talking about jewelry made by the seller. In other words, when asked why someone is selling jewelry, the answer would be "oh, just to sell it."

Perhaps with an underlying desire to share their work? And yeah, they could gift it, but one person only knows so many people, and selling would get the jewelry a lot further from home than walking up to a stranger and saying "here ya go."

I don't know what I'm saying here, lol. It's late and my mind is wandering as I look at all the pieces I've created over these past few months. They're sitting here, waiting patiently to go "on the block." And you know what? I've had them for so long now that I think I may actually cry if I sell any of them. Especially since I can't re-make them--every single one is OOAK. And once I can get good pics of them to show you guys it's going to be like showing them for the first time. Starlia told me that what she saw in person versus what I can get out of my weenie web cam is completely different. (I'm very excited about being able to show you all the "real" look of my work:)

Okay, enough rambling and wasting of bandwidth.

Yes, absolutely. I made beads and gave them away for years because I had to make beads and after I made them I had to make them go live somewhere else. It's just what I have to do. Selling them allows me to make more of them and make them go farther away!

You may feel sad, at first, when some of your cherished pieces go away... but then you'll feel free. Like liberating a little piece of yourself with every one you sell. When I've been really holding onto something, I like to tell the person who buys it... so they know they now own a piece that I kept on my nightstand for a year just because I needed to be near it.

Free? I think you're right. I think it'll feel really good, like a deep down inside good, to know that something *I* love so much is loved by someone else, too.

100% of the jewelery I make (ok, 98%, cause I make some for myself) is given away, or sold and the proceeds go to an organization that buys school supplies and computers and the like for inner city schools. It's called Educate the Children.

Are you talking about selling your jewelry at cost? Just so you can keep making it, etc?

I think most of us can't afford to just buy and not recoup expenses. And as well we/I keep trying to improve our materials on hand, both in quality and quantity, which also requires making investment from either your profits or from you family budget.

Another consideration regarding "just selling it" is that if you charge too little it will be perceived as having less value. Do you want to sell it without getting a profit and without letting people know what it's worth?

If you don't want that, then you DO want to sell it for money, recognition, etc.

Personally, I have no problem sharing my work. Gifts, etc. My problem is always in not giving it away.

I've found, in life, that if you can think it up, it is possible. Someone out there has done it.

One of the things I love about selling my beads is the idea that there are little bits of me out there all over the place. I get especially excited when someone from another country buys them.

Of course, I need the money, too, or I will have to resort to getting a "real" job. Joan Eckard
