OT - All Patched Up!

Well, in response to Patti's request for more non-ad posts.....here goes....

On an off topic note, I'm day 6 on the nicotine patch and ready to poke my eyes out!....LOL! After 27 years of smoking, I'm giving that nasty habit up! It's been so hard but I keep telling myself that this will be the best thing I ever do for myself. Already it's starting to affect my creativity though because all I can think about is having a cig. But instead, I just have myself a good cry and get right back out to the torch. Hey, if nothing else, I'll end up with a butt-load of orphan beads, right? =o) I'm drinking lots of water and doing little breathing exercises and I'm going to emerge on the other side of this as a new, healthier (and maybe a little bit fatter) me!

I am rooting for you! Smoking is a really dangerous, nasty habit. I never smoked, but I grew up with a smoker. It is one of the few conditions associated with aneurysm ... and I had one. Maybe the second-hand smoke wasn't the cause, but why take a chance that it could harm someone you love? Go, Dawn!!

I'm rooting for you too! Recently I've been thinking a lot about a friend of mine who smokes, even though she lost her mother to lung cancer and her father has emphysema. I want to encourage her without pushing her. I'm not good at keeping in touch with my friends, but I want them to be there when I call!

I know quitting will be one of the hardest things you've ever done, but there are a lot of good reasons to quit. Getting through the hardest things makes us stronger.

I have a friend that just quit by taking Welbutrin (RX), he said it made the cigs taste like, well, sh...t, maybe you could talk to your dr about that. I wish you all the best!

So glad to hear you're quitting! My mom quit awhile back after years of smoking, and it was hard for her. But she got through it. (((((hugs))))) Lean on your friends and take care of yourself! :)

Thank you so much to everyone for your kind words of encouragement! Day 12 on the patch and it's starting to get a *little* easier. I had to figure out the whole patch schedule thing first. I wore it through the night the first few nights and had one crazy dream after another and a very restless sleep. Then I started taking it off before bedtime, but woke to a craving I couldn't resist, so a few days I would have a cig in the morning waiting for the patch to kick in. Now I have Hubby slap a patch on me before I get up....LOL! He leaves for work around 7:00am, and when he comes to give me my goodbye smooch, he puts a patch on me and I can usually sleep for another hour before the crazy dreams start to wake me up. I'm determined to quit and know I'll be so much better off.

Oh, Karleen, I tried taking Welbutrin a few years back for weight loss but had to stop because it made me very irritable and emotional for no reason. I was either b*tching or crying the whole time I took it. Imagine how irritable I would be now with trying to quit smoking on top of that....LOL!

Weird that the patch causes crazy dreams!

Yeah, I know! It said in the booklet that came with the patches that one of the side effects could be "vivid dreams".....Vivid doesn't even BEGIN to describe the dreams I had. I tried hard to use it to my advantage and think about beads just before drifting off to sleep in hopes of getting some wild inspiration, but it didn't work.....LOL! I usually don't dream, or can't recall them when I wake up anyway.....but OMG!!! These were very detailed, VERY BAZAAR dreams!!!

Good for you, Dawn! I never tried the patch... I caught pneumonia instead in February, 2005 and then I quit. I was quit for 14 months, then my daughter's wedding came around 4-06 and I couldn't stand the stress... started smoking again as a result. :( I swear tho... next time I get sick, I am quitting smoking. It's so much easier when you can't breath, let alone smoke! lol
