ah - okay - that would make sense. but Jamie would never do that. she's actually pretty literate for a child who doesn't read the way the rest of her family does. she might do it with me, or with her friends, but she would never do it to anyone she thought it might bother.

her grandfather corrected her on her "speech patterns" once. she looked at him and repeated what she had said "his way" - ie., properly. and then said, "see, granddad, i can do it. i didn't mean to bother you. i usually only talk that way when i'm with my friends." he didn't correct her again and she tried to remember when she was around him.

I've been following this thread with interest... If a person is doing what you describe then IMHO it is disrespectful to the receiver of the letter. Why should anyone have to try and decipher purposely made errors?

I would not take this as a reflection of 'state of mind' at all.

I know I make a lot of errors, all phonetic. I hear the words in my head as I write, whereas good spellers tend to see them in print, and simply transcribe them.

I swear to goddess that if I find out the local schools teach writing that way, I'm quitting my job and homeschooling. I was homeschooled and I can spell, damn straight my kids are going to know how to spell too. If I wasn't sure of how to spell a word, I didn't get to spell it "creatively" (nice code for "lazy"), I got to walk my ass over to the dictionary and look it up. The dictionary is still my friend... I keep one by the computer, because I don't do online dictionaries. They're just no fun!

No wonder literacy is going to hell in a handbasket.

Congratulations/condolences on your kiddo going to boot camp... they do grow up in the blink of an eye, don't they?

I think your awareness of your spelling errors must help to minimize them, because I rarely see errors in your posts. I tend to make a lot of typos, mostly because I'm typing with one hand and cradling my li'l darling (she's asleep in my arms right now) with the other.

My ex-husband, on the other hand, doesn't care about his misspellings. He's an educated, intelligent man, but you wouln't know it to read his writing... unfortunate. I can recognize his writing anywhere, because he makes the same mistakes repeatedly, has made the same mistakes as long as I've known him, and it's due to simply not caring.

It does make a certain amount of sense to me. Sometimes, in very informal settings where people know me exceedingly well (there's a BB I'm on where we've all been "geeking" together since 1989) I play with language and spelling to create nuances that affect the meaning... sometimes it gets me in trouble with people who insist that my errors were accidental, which of course goes to show how crucial careful communication is.

Then, of course, certain misspellings may enter the popular lexicon of a group, like "chut up", "yicks", "d00d", "pron" etc. but those are all understood within the group, and do not constitute misspellings as such.

bingo. my father watched me spend over an hour with the dictionary trying to find out how to spell physical with an "f" before he told me to look under "ph".

It may not be laziness. My husband can't spell. Same as he can't remember names. The thing about names leads me to believe it's not even about how he was educated, though I know that contributed, as did a childhood full of more abuse than school. Learning disabilities come from an inability to see as others do, not laziness.

is he from the midwest or south? it's common there, too. probably the only reason i don't say it that way is because Daddy worked to hard to correct us when we were young - to get rid of the regionalisms.

every once-in-a-while David comes up with something that is SO Southern i have to stop and figure out what he just said.

That's a problem with me as well, typos are common when typing one handed (BTW Joshua ain't sleeping ATM, he's lying in his cot listening to Queen with me and laughing!)

I try not to make too many spelling errors when posting and if I'm not really sure if I've spelt something right I usually put (sp?) at the end of the word.

A friend's hubby is a retired USMC Sgt Major (last billet was as Command Sgt Maj of MCRD San Diego)... now a 2d grade teacher. The kids "walked all over him" the first year. He's still one of the "nice teachers", even if they don't get away with quite as much now. Kaytee "Simplexities" on
