You'd be welcome here, even if you were a "problem child." :-) Strangely enough, all the supposed problem children I've come across seem to act just fine in my house. Sometimes it takes a little coaxing or education, but I haven't met many kids who don't have a good heart.
One thing I have had to teach pretty much every kid who comes here is table manners. I'm a nut about them, and I am always astonished at how many children can't hold a fork correctly, or use a napkin, or speak with a full mouth. It always cracks me up to hear a kid "catching" another kid and telling them to get their elbows off the table.
My big table manners bribe, I mean incentive, is to take the girls to tea at the Park Plaza hotel. We get all dressed up and go to a fancy hotel that features yummy chocolate desserts instead of watercress sandwiches. The kiddos have to prove to me that they know their manners well enough to go, and we review acceptable behavior and dress well in advance. We've done this four or five times with different groups of girls (except for DD, who always goes, of course), and not one kid has disappointed me yet.
LOL! It's so funny, because it's easy to come up with a hundred reasons why having kids is a PITA, and the rewards are so intangible it's a wonder anyone ever lets themselves get suckered into doing it!
The benefits are something you just can't explain in words. The good news for people who can't/don't want to have kids of their own, you can reap many of these benefits without ever actually procreating, and the kids, too, benefit from having a grownup friend in their lives. And if you choose to adopt, you get the full benefit package but without all that messy, painful birth action! AND, there are many "hard to place" children in the State system who desperately need homes, and despite their issues, will adapt thoroughly and quickly to a new home. Drug-affected babies, mixed-race children, and sibling groups of young children are among the "hard-to-place", yet statistically, can have the best outcomes. If we can ever afford it, and decide we can handle having more kids, I want to look into state adoption. I don't know why people don't want mixed-race children, but I guess they're often overlooked in the system. :( And crack babies, contrary to what most people think, have about the best outcomes, in terms of catching up to their peers, of any drug-affected kids.
I think that shows that kids will rise to your expectations of them. Its sad that their parents didnt think good manners worthy of the time it takes to teach them. Thank you for nurturing so many kids. Diana
I agree, Kalera. We're going to be looking into this, definitely. We would like to eventually adopt a couple of mixed race older kids...much to the utter mortification of my family...LOL...but I just gotta have one baby...just one.
