I wish I could show this to my son's coach. My sister asked my son to "give her away" at her wedding in a few weeks. Our Dad passed away V E R Y suddenly last year and our Mom has been in the hospital for the last 91 days (but who's counting?) The coach won't let my son miss the game that day without penalties.>>>

So sorry to hear about that.
I am sure she understood that you could not keep your promise to stay in Ohio. I am sure she wanted you to be happy. It is too bad you weren't able to talk to her the last year but probably things just overwhelmed her. Even if she never got back to you, the fact that you tried to contact her probably got through.
It sounds like she would've more then understood your not being there at the funeral.
Maybe you can have your own "moment of silence" for her at a special time of the day (eg near when the inernment is being done?)

I wouldn't let this stand for a minute! The coach and I would have words, then I would take it to the school principal, then the school board is need be! Sports are all out of proportion in this country. Sports takes priority over everything. Sports figures drive drunk and kill people, they do no time. They rape, assault, commit murder....and get away with it. And it all starts in the schools. High school star athletes can do anything, commit any crime, just like their pro counterparts. Becki - I know how late this is, but I wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear about your friend, and mostly that you couldn't be there to say goodbye. I am mad at myself that I didn't read and respond to this sooner, because you really need support right now. I wish there was some way you could have gone because it really seems like you needed to be there. I am sure Jane knows now how heartbroken you are, and wants you to feel better.
