OT: I can't take it.

i can't stand it. i can't be without a dog. cat's are wonderful, and i wouldn't trade mine. but i NEED a dog.

so - the surveyors were here today. the fencing material will be delivered this week, and then we start setting posts and stringing fence. it's going to take longer than i want, because i want a dog RIGHT NOW, but i'm trying to be patient.

i'm considering:

lol....I've been there! About 9 years ago, I was going through doggie withdrawal. I became a dog magnet...they ran up to me on the street, when we'd go hiking, everywhere. I finally got my sweet Annie, a border collie/sheltie mix. Then, a few years later, we adopted Piper, my wonder dog, from Border Collie Rescue. I am so much happier with pups in my life! I hope they get your fence in ~quickly~ and you get your dog fix very soon!

I so understand the feeling. I had to put two dogs to sleep in the last couple of years and it about killed me. I didn't have one very long, but he was soooo sweet. He got parvo and the vet couldn't save him. He was suppose to be gone when we finally got there, but they hadn't completed the transaction. I just sat there holding him and crying. In fact I'm crying now just remembering the experience.

Now I have a wonderful Chihuahua named Trinkett. I never like chi's until she found me. Now I don't think I've ever had such a wonderful dog in my life. She is everything I've ever wanted and more. She gives me that unconditional love that you just can't get with another animal.

]Hey Vicki -- how about corgi rescue groups?

the one for N. Cal. doesn't have any - and i'd take one on a bet. they said their list comes out the 15th of each month, and they're going to send it to me!

]That's easy. Get two.

**snort** i had two beagles once. the vet very calmly explained that two dogs did FOUR times the destruction. i had to hire sitters for them when we wanted to go out.

**grin** yeah. that was Jamie's reaction.

there's a theory that there is a built-in reaction [i can't remember what it's called, senior moment again] that causes us to react to "young" faces that way . . . big eyes [compared to size of head], etc. it triggers a "protective" response in humans. which is probably a good thing . . .

]Wow! I've always (until now) had multiple dogs -- 30 years of them -- and that ]never happened to me! Did you crate-train them?

no - no crate training. i had never put a dog in a crate in my life. never occurred to me!

they were beagle/lab mixes - litter mates. what one didn't think of, the other did. but i loved them to death anyway. part of it was just "multiple puppyhood".

mine always wanted to herd the kids, as well as the goats, calves, and geese. they were not happy about it, either.

never get a dog any other way. This link tells a little bit about the process:

I wish the process of getting ~any~ dog was run as well as the rescue group we dealt with. We had a phone interview, an in-home inspection and interview, and had to supply them with references from our vet to make sure we understood all the aspects of dog responsibilities. I think this would help cut down on the number of animals that wind up at the shelters. (I do understand that it's a laborious process; but I love that they do it!)
