OT: It's a good thing I worked extra hard all week...

Isn't it funny how the universe work sometimes? As I may have mentioned, we need a new water heater, and although we could afford to buy one, we didn't have the money to have it installed (and theoretically I could do this myself but after procrastinating for a full month I finally admitted that I don't know how and I don't feel like learning) so my briliant plan this week was to work extra hours at the torch so we could pay someone to put it in for us.

Well, what do you know, but little sweet Sol Rosenberg (my cat) came home with a scrape (probably a shallow bite wound) last week. It abcessed, so I took him to the vert today... and it cost $250. Exactly what we were going to pay for the installation of the water heater! Oh, the irony! Well, the good news, though, is that I *had* the money. It's almost like the water heater decided to go on the fritz so I would have a reason to work extra so I would have the money to take care of my kitty! So right now I'm extremely grateful to that water heater, which is working perfectly for the moment. :)

BTW, this is a perfect illustration of why, if you have any say in the matter, your kitties should be indoors. Sol came to me as an indoor/outdoor cat at the age of 2, and with little people (and a dog) going in and out all day I stand no chance of keeping him in. If I had my druthers he'd be indoors only.

I fully agree with this. My cats never were outdoors cats, and they had happy lives. We would let them play in the back yard under supervision but never wander loose. I only wish our neighbors were as considerate, my garden would look better and the bird feeder wouldn't be treated by the local cats as some sort of buffet. Most cats have very happy, healthy lives as indoor cats.

I keep a Super Soaker water gun for the neighborhood cats. They know to run when they hear my boat window open.

Poor furbaby.

I am totally amused that you have a cat named Sol Rosenberg. :-)

There is always a reason or a plan. You may not know the reason or the plan at the time, but it will be revealed to you in some way.

I am glad to hear your kitty is doing better! And best of luck with that DARN water heater. Keep on Keepin' on.

Forgot to mention. Although a bit pricey, the tankless water heaters are awesome and do save money in the long run. They are available in gas or electric and provide unlimited hot water. We have the gas version and love it. Wouldn't go back to a traditional water heater if you paid me to.

My cat loved to hunt, loved to be outside. Although there are wild animals, I think the lack of pets and cars made it safer than being in town outside. My poor kitty died inside in a house fire. You know, I'm getting real tired of being the exception to the rule. Cats are almost always safer indoors.

I remember when they were thought to be luxurious. All the hot water you want! Even as one of 6 kids there would have been no double dipping.

But they've been around for more than 40 years. I'm surprised they aren't more common.

How does a tankless water heater work? The mental image I get just doesn't add up.

Basically, it heats water on demand - the water pipe passes through either a electric heating element or over a high-power gas flame and heats it up as it is used. It does take a mite longer for the water to heat up, but once it's going, watch out because you get spoiled! On our version you can actually set the water temp as you need it. I have a controller at the kitchen sink and another in the master bath.

The unit we have is about the size of a rollaboard suitcase and is mounted on the outside of the house (it's gas, so you need it outside for the ventilation).

In order to not waste water, I collect the cool water coming out the faucet into a bucket and use it for the dogs or to water the plants.

When we eventually buy a house (and it doesn't look like it's going to happen any time soon), one of the first things we want to replace is the water heater. Dh wants a tankless one, and after having lived in a house with a small apartment sized water heater tank....I totally agree with him. I"m sick of running out of hot water in 5 minutes. Since I shower every other day, I tend to take slightly longer showers, and want it hot the WHOLE time. Someday....

I have to agree. My cats are indoor cats, because they always have been, but also because there are any number of outdoor pets and wildlife around here. There are a couple of outdoor kitties that come around just to tease my cats, and it's annoying. Because they remain indoors, my cats don't have fleas, they aren't covered in dirt, they don't wander for days, and they don't end up with major injuries for having fought a nearby raccoon family, or the neighborhood rotweiler. It's just better, and they are very happy, spoiled kitties, too. :)

seconded! one $2000 vet bill for Boots was more than enough, thankyouverymuch. and that was on his first trip outdoors after we moved. he still complains about not being allowed out, because he was an 'abandon rescue', but i tell him 'tough luck'. Lucky was a feral rescue, but we got her so early, she doesn't ask to go out.

Thirded. Now that we've adopted a new kitten (she's been here for 3 days now), she'll be indoors as well. She used to be in/out, but she doesn't seem to miss it all that much. It might be due to the fact that we keep tempting her with strings and feathers...hehe.

WOOOOHOOOO!!

Thanks for the congrats. We have hemming and hawing about getting another cat for over a year, since we had to euthanize our precious Mel, but this kitten grabbed our hearts, and even DH has fallen for her (it was as simple as him seeing her love to play with the ring that comes off a milk jug, like our Mel loved to do).

If it ain't one thing it's t'other. :)

I was so happy that this didn't turn into a huge problem, and interestingly, the water heater hasn't shut off since!

LOL! It's just the right name for him. If you met him, you would see exactly what I mean! He went through three names before we realized that his REAL name was Sol Rosenberg. When he's looking especialy dignified I call him Mr. Rosenberg.
