OT: Just Got Home

But Starlia -- WHY does this woman have wild animals as PETS? Especially animals that have been taken (as Ringo was) from their native habitat to be her pet?

It is WRONG.

Starlia. This is not something to be proud of. To me it's not funny.

I am FURIOUS. Furious. Your friend is a selfish, self-indulgent fool.

Wild animals should not be kept as pets. JEEBUS. ~~ Sooz To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ~~Joseph Chilton Pearce

She should not have exotics in the first place. How is this possible in this day and age?

I thought people didn't do this anymore. I am so disappointed. ~~ Sooz To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ~~Joseph Chilton Pearce

You know, if she had done this with a person (invaded their home and took one away against its will), it would be called slavery. Plain and simple. Lemurs have social systems. This one was taken from its home and shipped thousands of miles away to live. (Through no choice of its own.) It is wrong. ~~ Sooz To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ~~Joseph Chilton Pearce

Please take care and if you have any reason to think you need to, take yourself to the hospital without delay. I hope things improve soon, Starlia.

No, dear, I meant YOU. Believe me, you're the only person I "know" who's even been in the same ROOM as a lemur! ROFL...

Starlia--sepsis is something to fight with every weapon you've got. Talk to your docs about high dose vitamin C intraveinously--especially if the bite area begins to get necrotic AT ALL. Vit. C intraveinously has been recorded to help with necrotic fasciatis, Hepatitis C, Dengue Fever and West Nile Fever---it can get virus based stuff that antibiotics alone won't touch. Also, my old fave MSM would be a good thing----wash the area, soak the leg itself, use MSM and sterile water and drink it too. Also garlic, in large quantities raw, and I would poultice with it too, if it were me, especially if we are talking removal of tissue options----garlic kills virus replication and even inhibits things that are totally resistant now to antibiotics like some strains of syphilus and TB. Oh, honey - we were all so worried about you! Thanks for giving us an update. I am really glad you are seeing a doctor - especially since the primate came from out of the country. I'm hoping for the best!! ((((((((hugs))))))))) Please take care and make sure that you follow your doctor's orders, even if they make you crazy. This is nothing to fool around with!!

Oh. My. God. I'm sorry Starlia, but SHAME on your friend for having these as pets. I know you feel sentimental, but this is illegal for a reason. If it were legal, she would have been able to get the proper shots and such for these animals so they don't put anyone in danger. Even domesticated animals bite on occasion! Friends are not supposed to put other friends in danger! This makes me angry, but of course I don't know all there is to know about all of this, so I can only sympathize with you.

Yes. Illegal for a reason. Animals that are not domesticated should never be kept in cages or kept at all. But this comes from someone who cries at seeing animals at zoos, so keep that in mind. I know you are close to your friend, but this is totally inexcusable. If your friend avoided precautions because she was afraid of the legal issues, then she is not your friend.

Hi Sarajane!

You need to have a place on your website for that kind of info...I know you have more! I'll never remember it and it sounds really helpful!

Starlia, I hope you feel better soon and this gets all cleared up!

This really scares me. I have small children, and the thought of someone having animals that could cause this type of infection so fast from a bite is just crazy.

I'm really gald to hear from you and know you are getting medical attention. I'm sorry it got so serious.

I've been so worried, I've been checking back here even more often than I've been checking the front porch for the package I'm waiting for.

Thanks to everyone who is concerned. I just got back from the doctor's office again. I've had shots, enough to make me sore for days. My ankle still hurts when I walk on it but it should be okay. I'm on high strength antibiotics and hopefully that will help with the infection. David (doc) isn't telling me everything yet. Instead he has talked with Dan who said he will come home and tell me everything.

I know what you guys think about a wild animal in the house. I feel the same way too but he's been with her since he was a baby. The new lemur was raised in captivity by a local pet outlet. My friend and I share the love of all animals big, small, scaly, and hairy. I can't help but be concerned for Ringo.

This is my task right now. I must find a vet that will take him into quarantine before tomorrow morning. My friends don't know what has happened yet so I need to drive out there tonight and explain the situation. I am

100% willing to pay for the quarantine if I can. I've gotten many estimates but none of the vets here are willing to take him. I would rather he go to the vets than an animal shelter at this point. I think it would be less stressful on him. The estimates so far are $210-$350.

If they are unwilling to surrender the animal then I have to have rabies shots. I'm positive that won't happen unless Ringo does have some disease that we don't know about yet.

DH is having a good laugh at my expense. He said I'm the only woman he has ever known that gets into ridiculous situations. Haw.

I can always count on your knowledge of all things like this. Thank you. I'll talk to the doc about vitamin C. I have tons of garlic since I eat it in high quantities. Almost in every meal so there is plenty around here. What is MSM?
