OT: Just Got Home

Hi everyone! I would return calls but it's late and I'm beat. I just got a reprieve from the hospital for the night. I have to be back tomorrow morning and may be heading to San Antonio or Houston if needed.

It's been a very long day with my doctor who is loving this new adventure in medicine. Thank God he is a friend too or I might strangle him.

I have no new news. I've been poked, prodded, tested and made almost crazy. The infection has spread up my leg. It's sore to the touch. At least we are still in shorts and sandals weather or I would be crying.

At the time I don't have to have rabies shots. That may change as we go along but doc is being cautious. Of course he has checked with CDC and other places to see what I might need. It all escalated when I told them that the lemur has not had any shots ever. That probably isn't good for either of us. And we found out he was imported instead of bred here. Ugh.

I promise to log on as soon as I get back tomorrow if I'm allowed to go home. I was told to pack a bag just in case. I am taking my computer if I have to stay in the hospital and my DVD player, MP3 player, and all my other toys to keep me from going nuts. The local hospitals have relays for internet access so I should be able to get online just fine. If not I can always use dial up. Either way, I refuse to just sit in a bed.

I overheard at one point in the doctor's conversations about something of surgery of the infected area. That really freaked me out and I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I hate all this actually. I feel bad for Ringo and I don't have any bad feelings towards him. The actual bite didn't hurt. The infection is what hurts so bad just because it's tender.

Okay, that's enough babbling for now. I will return all calls as soon as I can.

I love you guys! Thank you for checking on me.

I have known this lemur since he was a baby. We are really very good friends. I wouldn't have one because they can be messy and in a large environment. However, I originally went over there because she brought home a baby girl Sunday morning. She is so dang small compared to the full grown version. Ringo may have smelled her on me or something. Either way it wasn't a big deal until you hear all the things the doctors have to say. (They aren't nice things.)

I hate to think where Ringo is going to be heading. I hope they don't take Luna or the baby. Luna is a sugar bear or kinkajou. I'm not sure if I spelled that right but you guys can look them up. Luna is a lot smaller than Ringo and doesn't have huge canines like Ringo does.

Oh, yeah I forgot the best news. When he bit me he hit one of the veins in my ankle. Yeah! Blood infections. :-p

Christ on a white hot plate, Starlia. I swear to the gods if you ever even think about waiting to go to the hospital again regarding an animal bite, I'm gonna drive out there and kick your butt all the way to the ER myself, understand? (((((((((((((Starlia))))))))))))) I was worried sick about you, and dammit, this news didn't make me feel any better. I wish I could be there with you as you wait for info.

I hope you feel better soon. I know these are your friends and you are familiar with their animals, but these kinds of animals are not suitable as pets, really. I hope it works out for the best. Sending you healing vibes.

I'm so sorry dear. I really am. I hoped it wouldn't get this far but it has. I can hope in one hand and.......

I think they let me go tonight because I was bitching too much. LOL I hate hospitals, I really hate paramedics (men paramedics aka ex-husband), and needles. I'm not scared or anything it's just not pleasant, ya know.

I promise if I ever get bitten by a primate I'll immediately seek medical attention for myself and the offending animal. We are all hoping Ringo didn't get anything from me either.

Ok. Weird. I "personally know" someone who was bitten by a lemur. An imported lemur.

I'm not going anywhere except to bed for the night. I will keep everyone updated as soon as I get news. I'm hoping that I won't have to go out of town but if I do I hope it's close to the coast. Sea water always settles my spirits.

Warning: Lemur bites may not hurt when first bitten. A day or two later when the wound and it's all swollen and red is not good. Oh, and green stuff coming out of the wound is a very bad sign or so I've been told.

Also known as sepsis. It sounded like that when you described it at first.

That's pretty weird. Now you know two people who have been bitten.

What is really weird is that he is usually so sweet to me. He never reaches out for anyone but me from his cage. Not even his owners. He always wants me to love on him and I held him a lot when he was a baby. He is a very good buddy 99% of the time. He has never, ever bitten anyone before now. It could be that he is maturing and that could be the cause. I'm not really sure what set him off because we were getting along so well.

Starlia, I love animals, and I know you love animals. But if it comes down to you or Ringo, Ringo loses. period. I'm more than slightly angry at the person who is keeping him (you can't really "own" a wild animal), and burning with the heat of a thousand burning suns that she didn't give him proper veterinary care.

Manda, the animal expert, freaked when I said you had been bitten by a monkey. She said that they are incredibly filthy and that primate germs are really, really good at getting other primates sick (like us). She was terrified you got bitten on the torso or head (I missed the original posting), because that can easily lead to brain infection or death.

No kidding that hospitals aren't pleasant. But kiddo, you really should have let them admit you and put on you on IV antibiotics. Does it suck? Yeah. Does losing your leg over a damn monkey bite suck even worse? Hell Yeah.

As a frequent flyer with our local hospitals, I feel pretty qualified to say that they suck - but not being there for the people that love you sucks a lot worse.

Maybe you are, but I'm not. It's not Ringo's fault, but he is probably going to have to be euthanized to see if he has rabies. You do not want to have the rabies series of shots if you can help it, and most likely state law requires it.

That is the case in Massachusetts and in Connecticut, where I've had to deal with Cairns that have bitten - no record of shots and the state steps in. I just checked the Texas Dept. of Health, and if the animal's owner cannot provide vaccination certificates,Ringo will probably need to be euthanized - there is a provision for quarantine, but only if the animal is up to date on shots.

I'm still worried about you - take whatever meds they've given you, and drink like a camel to help flush out whatever bacteria that are doing bad things. Be prepared for at least a little surgery, to remove the tissue that has been killed by the infection.

If the doc has told you to soak that leg, please spend the night in the tub, changing the water.

We love you, don't let anything bad happen to you!

I know you care about your friend and probably don't want to think anything negative about her, but WHY on earth does she have an imported (i.e. wild-caught) primate which has had NO shots? More importantly, why is she allowing it to be around other people?

I hope everything turns out OK for the lemur, but the situation almost guaranteed that something like this would happen sooner or later.

Most likely jealousy... you were admiring the new baby, he got jealous and angry, just like a toddler would.

The thing that is really upsetting to me right now is that his owner failed to take the proper steps to make sure that her pet, and her guests, would be protected in the event of something like this. Permits, licensing, vet visits... all of these things can be expensive, but they are necessary.

yes. if you're going to have 'exotic' pets, you need to be even more careful than usual!
