races (yes, all

apart...and we're in

I'd happily trade you that "wifely duty"!

Would you prefer doing the laundry or vacuuming up the dog hair?

Honestly, I think it would be way cool to see the races. But hey, I'm a horse person. If I were you I'd read as much as you could about the horses and the owners and the jockeys and the trainers in the Triple Crown races.....so that every horse has a "story" that you can cheer for in your head. Either that or pick a colour of horse you like or some number ritual you fancy and compete with your husband with your picks and see how you do on $2 bets just for fun.

I really envy you.

Feh. I took a bus tour to see the Passion Plays in Oberammergau, Germany when I was seventeen. (Only way to get tickets was through a tour group. I went with a church group from Bavaria) I was many decades younger than the rest of the passengers, but I decided I was going to have a Good Time. Of course, we didn't have a common language (Bavarians speak Bayrisch, not normal German), and they were seriously mistrustful of me in the beginning, but we managed.

I hummed along and kept time to their folk music, enjoyed the scenery during "strolling walk breaks" (we don't have those in the US), and generally took in as much of the experience just as it came. In a little more than a day, they realized I wasn't a punk American teenager like they saw on TV, and several of them made friendly overtures toward me, like patting a chair for me to join them at breakfast. I used my best combination of German, English, pantomime and smiling to try and communicate.

By the end of the trip, I was everyone's granddaughter. I knew they loved me on the last morning of the trip, when instead of singing yet another Bavarian Folk Song, they sang "Home on the Range" in English! (well, kinda) They had learned it in secret over the previous days as a surprise for me. (Yep, I'm an old softie - I tear up just remembering how sweet they were to a homesick kid far away from home)

It also cracked me up when we returned to Bavaria and all these old folks tried to hook me up with their grandchildren. They tried to set me up for years, and only stopped sending geeky German boys to my grandparents' home after I was married. :-)

Are you kidding? Go to town, and buy something fabulous. Remember what Julia Roberts wore to the races in "Pretty Woman?" That was "classy casual." Try it, and I'm sure you'll love looking so wonderful, and so will your DH. This is his celebration, do it simply to see him happy. I guarantee that will make you pretty happy as well (not with the races, with your DH)

As for the horse races, I wouldn't love it either. (I'm terrified of the things - long story) But if it were something Bob was determined to do, I'd go and decide in advance I was going to have fun, dammit. I've gone to his bowling banquet (shudder) for at least the last ten years. The first time or two, I felt a bit out of place, and Lord knows, bowling doesn't interest me. But now I have fun. I look forward to seeing the people each year, and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

And I don't have to feel guilty when I make Bob go to museum or a bead show. I know it'll all even out in the end.

"This is my first K.D. It seems so exciting here, is it your first race, too?"

"These Mint Juleps are going right to my head. What do you think - are they too strong or is it just me?"

"How did you become interested in the hobby? Tell me about your first race? Did you bet? Did you win?"

Smile and be charming, and you'll have plenty of friends all around you in no time. Both you and DH will have a better time for it, and maybe you'll want to go again sometime.

Yep. You can concentrate on the pretty horses, and the gorgeous color combinations of the jockeys' silks (for beading inspiration, of course). Make a few bets for small money using whatever "sure fire system" you devise, and if you win even $2, jump up and down as if you had won a million!

It really will be okay.

I tried to respond earlier and it looks like it did not make it. Here we go again, I used to live in Louisville,20+yrs, I have been to the derby. The most important thing I can tell you is that it is a lot better on TV than in person. 110,000 people in a place designed for

75,000. Lots of drunks, a mint julip is just crushed ice with cheap bourbon poured over it and a sprig of mint added, sometimes some sugar- at least at the track. There are better recipes. Remember the horses only run once an hour, 2 minute race wait an hour then another 2 min race. If your seats are in the open you definitely need sun protection. It will not only be hot but very humid. Don't get dehydrated. Which means don't drink a lot of alcohol since it sucks the fluid out of your tissues. Classy casual huh. Just make sure you are comfortable. There will be people there dressed for the easter parade, long dresses and formal wear for men. Also, people in jeans and T shirts. I have been both ways, coat and tie, and jeans, T shirt and tennis shoes. Nobody really cares. You will probably never see any of them again except your DH. Go to the museum at the track, you can kill an hour or 2 there. I think you can still go in and out on the same ticket all day. There used to be some really nice old neighborhoods around the track. Ask some locals and make sure it is safe. I left there in 1965. Just look at it as an adventure, kind of like a trip to Mars. Sounds like you have been to tracks before, Churchill Downs is just older and more crowded. Take a small pair of binocs so you can people watch. The real action is in the infield where the masses go. I've been there and in the really high up boxes, it is still one race an hour and if you are not into horse racing it is BORING. Oh well enough rant for now. If you want I can give you numbers for friends who still live there. Hope you are there for "Thunder Over Louisville"- $2million fireworks show downtown off the old bridge.

And one of the advantages of wearing something that long is that you can cheat by wearing knee-high nylons instead of pantyhose! Not to mention that you won't look like a clone of everybody else. This is what I call "eccentric artist wear".

I take an XL, and I'm a size 18. I'm a bit larger in the hips than they say an XL fits, but I looked at the actual garment dimensions and decided they were being hyper-conservative in their sizing -- and in fact, the XL is a very comfortable fit.

Almost all their garment descriptions say some variation on "butter-soft viscose fabric". Viscose is the generic term for rayon. Some pieces have insets of satin or velvet, probably also made of viscose.

I got one of their Celtic/Gypsy gowns/dresses (you can view it here:

) My only beef with it is when I washed it tonight, my hands have a slight black tinge in some places from the dye, but that will go away. I love the dress and will go back for more of their clothes. The dress is gorgeous, and they have lots of styles and colors. Lots of different things to choose from. They have peasent shirts and so on that could be paired with a long skirt and what not, as well as the dresses and some 3 piece sets, they also have pants, but they are the kind that belly dancers and harem girls wear. The shipping takes up to 14 days as it comes direct from New Dehli, India, but it is worth it. Marissa

All the auctions I looked at from Holyclothing.com said the items were located in Toronto Canada, but the stamp on the package said New Dehli, India. Also further down in the auctions, it says the items ship direct from India. I am not sure how that works with them listing the item in a different location then it really is...

The person in Toronto is a distributor for the manufacturing company in India. This is what's called a "drop-ship": you pay the distributor, the manufacturer ships the item directly to you from the factory and then invoices the distributor for it. We do a lot of drop-ships for Pegasus Publishing, which is how I know how this works.

Did you look for "holyclothing" or for "holyclothing.com"? The latter is the company with all the dresses. I don't know what the other person sells; every time I've mistyped the seller ID it comes up with "no auctions".
