OT: L o n g Hurricane Update

Hope this doesn't bore you all, I know you have Jim Cantore and all but I thought you might want an "on the scene" from a local.

I think we are set. We took down the arbor, moved all the plant pots (outside), put the outdoor furniture in, moved the cars out of the way of obvious trees. All around the neighborhood the only people who are boarding up windows are the ones with a lot of trees on their property. We have had so much rain this summer that a bigger concern than the wind is the trees uprooting because the ground is so saturated. Schools all closed half day today and are not scheduled to reopen until Monday. Stores are emptying out and the traffic is very plentiful and purposeful.

Oil lamps are filled, candles are set out, tarps, staple gun, screws and drill in the hallway, water bottled, canned goods stocked. Might take down the computer tonight, maybe wait till the morning. In the VI, we had to take all the pictures off the walls, clear all surfaces and ended up losing it all anyway. Don't have *that* big of a one aimed at us, so that's a plus!

I took all the ice out of the ice maker and bagged it so that we can make more and fill the coolers when the power goes. It's odd trying to get ready for a hurricane here when we have been through such a roof ripper in the past. Don't want to go overboard, but neither do we want to be unprepared. I guess here in this area, the most you do is prepare to be without power and make sure the most obvious things don't get blown around, identify the windowless, central spot in the house and get ready to bunk in. The worst thing about hurricanes is that they move so damn slowly and the sounds are horrific. Here anyway, they're estimating that the strongest winds will start around 11 am tomorrow and in this area get no stronger than 115, which is not so bad (not so good, but not so bad). That timeframe would be better, night hurricanes are the worst! Right now we're already getting some gusts, so I don't imagine there will be a lot of sound sleep tonight.

Most of the Outer Banks have evacuated, so that is good. It always makes me so mad when people don't heed mandatory evacuation and then put the police, coast guard, firefighters, ambulance and rescue people at risk who have to go in and save their stupid butts!

So there you have it. We had to have our beloved dog put "to sleep" yesterday after staying up withhim for nights (long, sad story, don't ask), so all in all this has been a pretty crummy few days! We are trying to put aside that sorrow so we can be what we need to be for the kids, but it ain't easy.

Pray for the old folks and those who are afraid. Thanks

ok, well after it leaves NC, it is headed here. We haven't done a thing to prepare, although tomorrow I will clear the back porch and bring in the tomatoes. My roof is over 20 years old, so my biggest fear is rain on our head!

So sorry to hear about your puppy. 8-(

well, when we had a forest fire coming at us, i asked my brother about staying and fighting the fire if it got close to the house. his response?

"Sis, if they tell you to leave, and YOU DON'T, i will PERSONALLY make sure that you get the bill if they have to try to rescue you!"

I just finished clearing everything off the deck and porch. Need to find a relatively safe place to park the cars. Other than that, not sure what else to do. It's not supposed to get bad here (DC area) until tomorrow afternoon, I think. Sounds like you're well-prepared, Christy. and know what to expect. Should be interesting....

I am so sorry for you. But as a dog lover, I'd like to thank you for doing the kindest, last and best thing for your dog. It's never an easy decision, but it shows the love you had for your old friend, to be able to stop the pain that kept life from being fun any more. I'm sure that if your dog could talk, he'd bless you for caring for him enough to let him go.

Love,

I got a bill from the Fire Department for use of the "Jaws of Life" when I was squished by the Mack Truck. It was about $100, IIRC - it was 20 years ago, so I don't remember it to the penny. Made me laugh though: it was an itemized bill. Jaws of Life Rental: $100; Firefighter Rescue: N/C.

Ask your brother what he would do if manditory evacuation meant that you had to leave your pets behind. For me, that was always the big sticking point. Thank God, the only time we had to evacuate was when I was a kid in our summer home on Cape Cod. We just drove home and took the pets home with us.

Leaving Sophie here to die is not an option, in my opinion. I'd be fine with keeping her crated the entire time, but not leaving her behind. Actually, it's pretty likely that the firefighters would want to leave me behind as well: I have way too much medical gear for a shelter situation.

Obligatory Bead Reference: The RAW pieces I'm working on are adaptations of the RAW necklace project highlighted in the latest Bead and Button. They have their necklaces use RAW all around the neck, but I find that heavy and uncomfortable, especially since I'm using Cathedral beads and not little teeny crystals. So I make the RAW part go from collarbone to collarbone, and just string the part in the back. Much lighter, and you really can't tell the difference.

I've decided that right angle weave (RAW) with seed bead sucks rocks, but it's fast, fast, fast and fun with decent sized crystals or those 6 mm Cathedral beads. Tonight's project, if I can stop the pain enough to bead, will be another 3 mm crystal necklace, this time with assorted fruits. DD is clamoring for one in the same style as the Bacchus necklace, but with apples, bananas and strawberries. It should come out nicely.

Thanks for that post. A great, if not fun, word picture. Watching and caring.

Very sorry you had to make that hard call... sounds like your storm preparations are sensible and in proportion, and that is good modeling of 'what to do in a difficult time' for your kids. That's being what they need, IMO.

Hope ya'll are okay today. So so sorry about the dog. I had to have one animal put to sleep, and it was for the best. When it comes time for my sweet kitty to go, I will hold him on my lap and sing him out. Yes, I write songs for him. Not parodies either ... they are real songs for a really big baby. He sits on my chest and I sing to him. The big sissy is so scared of everything ... that when it's time, we'll sing ... Hope you guys made out okay ,,,, Rainbow
