OT: My Kids (long and not at all happy)

Can either the VA or a Hospice service have someone in to give you a break? It would be good for him if you could get him used to having another person help. In preparation for the day when it will be necessary, whether any of you want it or not.

Sadly, it doesn't surprise me to hear you say this. I'm not a vet, but because of my own problems I have talked with many vets about their "treatment" at the hands of the VA. It's appalling.

I'm sorry to hear that Jim has given up on himself-- it's sad but not uncommon, I think. OTOH, I'm glad to hear that you're finding things that help you. Different things will work for different people, and staying on a fruitful course of self-care is so important. I hope you'll continue to find ways to help yourself and perhaps, with some time, will begin to recover from your own physical ailments.

Sounds like a wonderful time. It's good that you're getting to spend the day with him; I hope you both will really enjoy it!

Thank you. You know, I wrote a very long reply to you earlier today, but I decided to let it sit in my outbox because I it probably would be a bit of an overshare for the group.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, though. As a PTSD sufferer who is having a relatively successful "recovery", I have enormous empathy for both sides of this issue; I will always be grateful to those who stood by me when I "broke". I know it wasn't easy for them. I can only say, with much gratitude, that it is very good to be loved, and even better to be able to love back.

Very tru, Laura.

And Barbara, the symptoms you listed do match a lot of the fibromyalgia stuff, and also a lot of the PTSD stuff too. The fact that Jim wants the relationship enough to train himself not to yell at you is a VERY very good sign. He can learn other behaviors too, like being able to stand it when you are gone for an hour.

I know how horrible it is to be so very fearful about your loved ones. I have trouble in this area too, but am working on it, and its a little better every year. When my firstborn son started kindergarten, the first class was when my second son was 5 days old, and the Stockton Playground Massacre had happened that week. There's me, with post-partum depression, PTSD, an infink in the stoller and a five year old by my hand as we walk to the first day of school, me thinking about the kind of person who would shoot firstgraders as they play....I was not a happy camper. But thanks to acting school, I was indeed able to give the performance of a lifetime as The Nonchalant Mom who waves a cheery "bye-bye" and goes off leaving her kiddy in the loving arms of Academia. And then cried the whole way home. Thank goodness Andy slept through it. Time passed on, I did not, and all the children were still alive and well four hours later. I was a dishrag....but one who made it through the day, and the next one...Now he's graduated from High School. I still get the sweats and tremors sometimes.....B vitamins daily really do help. Last winter my doctor advised me to take Folgard B vitamin OTC. They're not cheap, but they're effective. I eat quite a bit of meat and was surprised I needed them.

Stay with him? It would have to be a close friend, he doesn't like strangers. But I do arrange for friends to visit, take him out to lunch or dinner, etc. Usually every other day. It helps a little. Barbara Dream Master

I filed for additional money to pay for an aide and help with the house and yard work 6 months ago. I am still fighting with the VA to get it. Barbara Dream Master

I've tried a slew of vitamin regimens. I'm finding that folic acid, vit. E and selenium seem to help. At least at the moment.... Barbara Dream Master

those are good ones. These days I get all my vit. E and my omega3-6-9 oils in flax seed oil; I take a tbsp. every day in my yogurt....it really is for my joints, keeps everything in my knees-hips-back-elbows moving with much less pain. The funny thing is, it also helps with depression! My sister is also taking it for her fingers, after the frostbite damage, and she's found this to be true as well. Sarajane

Sometimes you can get a lot of vitamins into your belly, but they don't neccessarily get processed. Some need other things present to work. Me, I can't stand taking pills, so I take Emergen-C packets, made by Alacer

and these have a whole gram of C plus all the B'sin largish doses plus minerals. Mix 'em with water, or juice, or sodas, an IALWAYS take a few with me to shows, etc... Its an instant energy boost becauseit all starts to get into your body in the mouth tissues, not in theintestines.Sarajane

There is apparently some preliminary research suggesting a connection between fibro and exposure to chemicals found in some common insecticides. But no further work has been done to establish or disprove the suggestion.

This wouldn't surprise me a bit. The toxicity of some things takes a while to show up, and makes linking the effect to what triggered it very hard.

I think the abuse/exhaustion factor is one where our capacity to deal with toxicity of a variety of kinds gets slowly degraded as our immune systems become more and more depressed by chronic and/or acute stress. Eventually we just don't have anything left to bounce back -with-, and we stop bouncing back.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Deirdre S. :

]our capacity to deal ]with toxicity of a variety of kinds gets slowly degraded as our immune ]systems become more and more depressed by chronic and/or acute stress.

that would explain _me_ a LOT.

Yeah my therapist recommended me taking Omega 3 as well as my medication for depression. I hadn't tried it yet- maybe I will now.

Do give the flaxseed oil a try--its the best non-animal source of the Omega3-6-9 fatty acids. The others are from fish-oils as a rule. Those are good too...but the flaxseed particulates have their own goodies in there as well. Its even recommend for shingles and psoriasis and other connective tissue /nerve problems. Sarajane

Thanks for the info. Is there any particular form that's better than others (are there different forms- tablets, drops etc)

there are, and the prices and value fluctuate. Caps are cheaper for a real good reason. Go for the bottled cold-pressed oils, not the capsules. There's also a freshness date on the oil bottle--make sure its still good, and keep in the fridge--you can also freeze some if you want and it keeps for a few months longer. I get the next to smallest bottle, I think its 16oz. or so and that way it lasts about a month and doesn't have time to get old. The brand I like best is Barlean's (I think) although I got the other kind on sale last time and it seems fine too. Major thing to look for is that you want it cold pressed, and fresh as possible. Slightly nutty, somewhat "brown" flavor. I take one tablespoon a day, you can take up to three if you want....I put it in my morning yogurt or in smoothies. My sister mixes hers in her salad dressing. Don't heat or bake it tho. The oil/fat content makes smoothies with fruit and ice taste more like real ice cream!! This stuff also contributes to hair, skin, and nail growth, and I'm cutting my nails twice as often these days. Also skin is not so dry, and my joints don't hurt near as much, and I'm less depressed. All this in a spoonful a day seems good to me! Sarajane
