OT Story - DD on her vacation.

Her Serrated Edge books are geared towards mid-older teens, IMO. There are blurbs in the back of each one to the effect of "if this situation hits a nerve with you, here's how to get help" and relate to child abuse, runaways, etc.

My daughter's book of the moment (she just turned 15) is Les Miserables, unabridged. I figure she can handle quite a lot after that.

The thing that makes me wince, with her love of vampire stuff, is the day she discovers Laurell Hamilton. I won't let her read THEM til she's well over 18. But I love 'em bunches!

just a note of caution. Jamie was really really into the "Goosebumps" books. i didn't like it, but i kept buying them from Scholastic anyway. When she wanted the "Fear Street" books, i said "no way. read them if you must - but i'm not spending MY money on them." she got totally ticked off at me and has not read for pleasure since. in hindsight, yes, i made a mistake.

and the weird thing was, i let my older daughter read Gone With the Wind in the sixth grade. i guess sex didn't bother me as much as horror does. when the librarian called me and questioned it's suitability at that age, i told her, "if she wants to check it out - let her. if it's over her head, she'll skip those parts. if it isn't over her head, she'll ask questions or make her own decisions."

in retrospect, i should have done the same thing with Jamie. it's a decision i really, really regret.

No, SHE made a mistake -- allowing her anger with you about one thing to dictate her long-term behavior over unrelated issues. It's her decision, but it's not in any way, shape or form YOUR fault, any more than it was my mother's fault that I wouldn't wear blue glasses frames for 20 years after she bought me a pair I didn't like. Eventually I got over it. She may too.

I can't count how many times I've read the Narnia Chronicles. Kevin and I are about to read it together for the first time (he's read it many times too). ~~ Sooz

I haven't read all this thread so I don't know if someone mentionned it before but my favorite ever kid book is The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg...not really a story book but a book that makes the kids and even grown up's imagination run full gear!

If you liked the Narnia Cronicles, Check out Lloyd Alexander's Prydian Series. They are a wonderful blend of ledgends and mythologies. There are 5 books in the Series:

The Book of Three The Black Cauldron The Castle of Llyr Taran Wanderer The High King (Newbery Award Winner)

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL books.

(yes, Disney made a movie called The Black Cauldron. About the only resemblance it has with the book is the title. It made me furious. They took a wonderful series and forever skewed it into horrid obscurity.)

My husband had never heard of them. I've had the complete series in Hardcover since I was in 3rd Grade. He read them after we got married, and was totally enthralled by the series.

]No way in hell do I consider the "Arrows" series suitable for younger than a ]mid-teenager. It's not the sex that bothers me, it's the graphic descriptions ]of torture particularly in "Arrow's Fall".

well, i've thought about it. i'm not sure i agree, but what else is new?

and, of course, every child is different.

there was actually a discussion in one of her other books between Kethry and Tarma about children needing to know there are dangers out there . . .

Knowing that it exists is one thing. Reading about it in glorious and loving detail is quite another. Blair is just now getting to the age where I wouldn't be concerned about her reading this.
