OT: The new me

This afternoon, without telling anyone in my family, I had my hair cut. I now have a 16" ponytail all ready to go to Locks of Love (a charity that makes human hair wigs for child cancer patients).

My new do only comes to the nape of my neck in the back and maybe chin length in the front, and I love it. My head feels about 10 lbs. lighter. (yeah, yeah, make all the airhead jokes you'd like) The stylist asked me what I wanted, and I said, "You're the artist - I want a shake it out and wear it hairstyle. After that, it's up to you."

She started grinning and said, "Do you how few people say that?"

Bob and DD are going to be shocked. I've had hair to may waist since before I was married, even before I was dating Bob. I started growing my hair long in 1983, because they shaved my head after the car accident. DD has never seen me without all that hair, and Bob has probably forgotten what I looked like before.

Poor stylist asked me what my family was going to say about my short hairstyle, and I told her that they have no idea that I'm doing this. She started to get all nervous and said, "Your husband won't hold me responsible

- will he?"

heh, heh, heh.

I always love that feeling of cutting it all off. I did it the first time when I was 12. My Papa wouldn't look at me for two weeks he was so mad.

The last time was about a year ago and I also donated to locks of love. I think I had about the same amount of hair to donate. It's for a good cause and I felt so good.

Now I'm back on the road to long hair. It's just cleared my shoulders....

Love it! When can we see pics of the new do? What prompted this drastic action? Do you love it? Diana

Next week. The cameras are with Bob and DD on vacation. Bob tells me that they have "hundreds" of photos to upload. There's one of DD with a shark she had caught, moments before she released it. We only do catch and release fishing, because those two don't eat fish, and I haven't eaten a catch since I was a kid. Some of the other people on the pier were throwing their fish to the hungry pelicans that were waiting for a free meal, but DD wouldn't hear of it.

My hair has thinned drastically from the medications I'm on, and if I need further treatment for my lungs, I'll lose it all. I decided that giving my hair to a good cause was much better than simply sweeping it off my pillow every morning and throwing hair into the trash.

I hadn't planned on it looking a lot better, but the stylist did a wonderful job. My hair doesn't look thin at all. If anything, it's "poofy." I've never had poofy hair before. The top layers are longer than the underneath layers, and all of it is a little wavy - it's a natural wave, but I didn't even know it was there - my long hair had weighed it down.

Despite my bravado, I kept my eyes closed tightly until the stylist said she was done - I didn't want to look. I felt a little woozy when I first saw that long braid in my lap, but by then there was no going back. Now I'm really glad I didn't chicken out.

My mother insisted on coming along with me (she had stopped by because she knows I'm alone this week, and thinks I'm lonely). It was wicked funny to see her in the mirror, all worried about what I was was doing, and without telling Bob - oh the horror! After I was done, she complimented my hair, and asked me why I had picked this salon instead of one of those $8 chain haircut places. (This was not a cheap haircut.) I looked right back at her and said, "Think I'd have gotten this haircut from an $8 chain haircut place?"

She paused and I tossed my head to make my new 'do flip around. It fell perfectly into place all by itself. "I see your point," she said, and went back into the salon to make an appointment for herself.

And yes, I do love it. Feels really strange, but I love it.

That is so YOU, to decide to do something to benefit other people at the same time you're dealing with your own health issues. I stand in awe.

Good! I've thought about cutting mine from time to time, but so far I just haven't had the nerve to do it. Besides, with it long, I can still get the

*look* of short by putting it up; if I cut it, my options go way down. But I'm glad yours came out so well.

Heh. My father got a harsh reality check on this subject once, when I was still in college. He'd been nagging me to go get my hair done, and I'd been putting it off, and so one day he came in and INFORMED me that I had an appointment the next day at the salon in the nearby shopping center.

What he didn't realize was that this place's clientele ran mostly to blue-haired old ladies with perms. They had *no clue* what to do with my hair, especially since I wouldn't let them cut it, and it looked AWFUL when they were finished. And *he* had to look at it for the next 6 weeks; it was summer break, I wasn't doing anything in particular, and I figured I could live with it until my next regular cut. He never pulled *that* particular trick again, though!

kathy the cancer meds i have been on has thinned my hair sooooo badly, i decided enought was enough and started wearing wigs. not just any wigs, they are styling!

the favorite is a dark dark blond with chunks of light blond champaign in places...saggy cut, actually i cut the neckline off, it hung down to shoulders and i didn't like that, it now flips a bit at the ends. the sides fan out and the bangs can be easly finger combed... i have 3, waited till they were down to

  1. not 90. all 3 are same color but all are different placements of color. one parts the other way, one the hair on top is a kinda tina turner, the other is perfect...but i love them all. makes my eyes huge, specially when i deem to wear eyemakeup.

also have one greener eye and one browner eye. manda has always been that way, mine used to be velvet brown but turned greener after age 10. now they are 2 different colors. just what i need...more weird stuff!

people are so startled when they compliment me on my hair and i thank them and offer to let them try it on. jon told me i have to stop doing that. i don't know, the look on thier faces is priceless!

Yay! I hope it's as easy to take care of as your long hair, Kathy. That would be the icing on the cake!

Now that sounds fun!

I bought a wig and had it styled the same as the hair on my head so that noone would realize it was a wig. The gal who did it was good, except for those who knew that she also shaved my head for me.

Oprah had gals on her show who hadn't had their hair cut in years. They cut their hair on the show and donated their pony tails to Locks of Love. I miss the show but wanted to see the before and after pictures and found them on her site.

My daughter asked about the pictures and what the deal was. I explained about Locks of Love and why children need the hair. She immediately went into compassion mode and has decided that she will grow hers until she's 7 years old so she'll have a bit more than 10" to donate. She already has 10" in the back with some shorter layers in front. Another year of growth will do it.

Tis a giving thing to do and I'm glad you did it.

Fortunately, I haven't quite reached that place yet. If the meds do make me lose all my hair, I plan to shave my head and go with the shiny look (especially if it's summer) Hey, maybe if I painted my head like a baseball, the Red Sox would finally break the curse of the Bambino!

It sounds like you look very beautiful.

My friend, it's not weird, it's unique. You are a one of a kind artist's creation. Be glad for it.

NO WAY would I stop doing that! My uncle is a little extreme - if someone compliments his gorgeous blue eyes and says "I wish I had eyes like that," (you know it's coming, but it's so icky that you are compelled to keep reading...)

He takes out his glass eye and offers it to them. All together now: "EWWWWWW"

The hair joke is wonderful - I'd do the exact same thing! So far, I'm blessed, My new short 'do makes me look like I have ton of hair, and if I'm really lucky, I won't need the modified chemo for my lungs. There's always hope.

I mostly agree. On the other hand, I love Pete's winter beard, so soft and fluffy. His trimmed summer beard looks great, but I miss the feel of his furry soft one in summer.
