Paranoid Me? or Ebay Scam?

YOu are so right Su,

But half the time, these scams are illegal and the laws out there don't count for toffee. Just gotta be streetwise about everything these days.

I too will blanch whenever I see my ebay or paypal account mentioned. And like you, I too have to keep reminding myself its a scam, and I consider myself more scam-savvy the average.

These scammers work on the basis of frightening people, so that they end up in a fear-reaction and will maybe not read things as carefully as normal, or will be so afraid that their accounts are compromised that they rush to "secure" them without thinking.

I would write back and tell him the only way you can do that is to have him western union all the money up front. Then when you receive the cash you would do it.

But it does sound a little like the Nigerian stuff we get.

Oh dear yes,

That Nigerian one is funny - I remember when we used to get it by snail mail even, before emails - it has been doing the rounds so long.

That has happened to me twice. I was able to catch it right when I did it and changed both of my passwords in ebay and Paypal immediately before they could catch it. So I have vowed never to answer email in the middle of the night or at the crack of dawn. If it is an ebay or paypal email. I must wait to open it. I usually just erase them right away with out ever opening them at all.

A 419 scam email originating from a mail server in India, with central/east asian names and backstory.

I think that's carrying the concept of outsourcing a little too far.
