sorta OT -- amusing eBay scam

Okay, this is actually funny. I got a spoof eBay email informing me that a potential buyer wanted to contact me.

I don't have anything for sale on eBay.

I got a spoof email informing me that I had been contacting cutsomers saying that the items for sale were actually mine. It gave an item # and date I had done this. I've NEVER sold on ebay and it's been more than a year since I bought anything on ebay. I've just been there looking. Oh, I went and looked to see if there really is such a seller and there is, selling computers. Nope! I haven't looked at computers on ebay in 2 or 3 years. Barbara in SC

If they want to buy something from you so badly, look in your attic for something you have always wanted to get rid of. LOL

They don't want to buy something from you, they want to get your personal information. They are hoping you are stupid enough to go to their site and enter your ebay or Paypal account information.

They are getting really clever with their tricks. The emails look exactly as an Ebay email would look.

I got one the other day that said that a seller was waiting for a payment from me. I almost fell for it because I had just purchased something from Ebay.

Every time Ebay sends you an email to your regular email account, they have also sent one to your Ebay email account.

So if you suspect (or even if you think it is legitimate!), sign onto your ebay account from your shortcut or Favorite list (never with the link in the suspicious email) and see if you have a message waiting for you. Only if you find one should you trust the email.

I get at least 2 of those a day along with the PayPal things saying my account has been flagged, etc. Pretty good, since I have never even been to the ebay site and I have never had a PayPal account.

Ditto for me Sherry. I've never bought - or sold - on Ebay and I don't have a PayPal thingy either. I don't get 2 a day, but I probably get one a week, and I got the one today that BlackRose is talking about. Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky!!!

I get dozens of those and Pay Pal ones weekly. Rather tiring.

For the ebay ones, ebay does ask that you send them the entire message with headers to snipped-for-privacy@ebay.com They do try to investigate them as it gives them a bad name when people get ripped off after responding to one.

I suspect Paypal has a similar email but I haven't bothered to try and navigate their site to find it.

Whenever I get anything from a propertied paypal or Ebayer I always pass it on to Paypal at the addy snipped-for-privacy@paypal.com and they confirm that it is a phishing expedition. I was being facetious when I said you should contact them. NEVER respond directly to them.

And like Linda in TX, ALWAYS forward it to paypal (or ebay as the case may be). With all headers, if possible. Maybe it didn't fool you, but if they shut down that particular scammer, you might have spared someone else getting fooled. So don't just delete them -- forward them. :-D
