Re: Beady Las Vegas

Just curious -- what makes a rhinestone real, or unreal?

(Sounds like a fun place, btw...)

Real rhinestones of every size and color.

I don't think so. I'd be really surprised if they did. The snail addy is:

Williams Costume Co, Inc.

1226 S. Third Street Las Vegas Nevada 89104

702-384-1384

I found them through a search for "beads" on the internet yellowpages.

Do remember that there's so much stuff there you can't see it all at once, your eyes have to adjust. Also, many things are sortof hidden in boxes under bottom shelves in the cases, etc....you have to be really vigilant, and there's sooooo much to go through. You know how the oldfashioned hardware stores were? Its like that, only in a costume/bead sort of way...and to go with the analogy, there's many kinds and colors of chains and nailhead studs!!

some people use the word "rhinestone" generically, meaning sparkly-faceted-thingy, much as they call all tissues "kleenex". But real rhinestones were originally stones from the Rhine River region, and are a much higher quality Austrian crystal, not a formed acrylic with metallic paint on the back. I'll look around and see what the dictionary definition is and report back! Sarajane

I thought they were quite reasonable. Plus, you can get smaller amounts--by the dozen instead of a three gross minimum per size per color like at some internet sites. Though here's an interesting one--

Thanks. That covers what I wanted to know. And if 'real' rhinestones are lead crystal they are a serious cut above acrylic with metallic paint...

don't miss Liberace's museum, either! What a display!!! it's a kind of "what can you do with beads" inspiration you'll never forget!!!! b

Go to Williams'!!!! Get thee there!!! (oh, and down the cross street there is a vintage store that has VERY nice stuff. Even a Shaipparelli hat.) I begrudged every nickle to a slot machine after the trip there. Less than $15 of my dollars went to gambling. I brought home sparklies.....LOTS of sparklies. Wish I'd picked up more beads, too. But then, there's never enough! Sarajane
