Got flaxseed oil and the MSM, and Pete's doc's OK on his use of the flaxseed oil. He immediately said yes, without any equivocating. Pete probably has myofascial syndrome. He differentiated that from fybro, because the trigger points are different, and because Fybro includes a sleep disorder.

Wise woman, sounds like you want to treat the causes and not just the symptoms. Western traditional medicine tends to want to treat the symptoms only. Thats seems so odd to me. Good luck finding relief that works for you! Diana
Great! I heard something on TV news last night about a new report says Omega 3 fatty acids are shown to increase Seratonin levels and improve brain function. Also said takes 1-3 weeks to show , so do let us know what you think of it, by and by! Sarajane

JoJo, I take one tbsp a day, but you can take teo or even three if spread out.
1 tbsp. contains over 8 grams of omega 3 and the dose they were talking about on tv last night in some study was 1 gram. So 1 tbsp. seems like plenty for me. SarajaneSarajane's Polymer Clay Gallery

This gets my vote, too. I like learning new possible health options.

Valerie, one of my favorite sources for info on this has been "The Duke University Hospital Book of Arthritis and Connective Tissue Diseases" but I looked at Amazon and its not there--I got it at the library. I read about 12 huge books on arthritis management, and connective tissue diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arth., fibro, Crohn's Disease (all have similar sources) ---the public library has a lot, and will also order books in for you from the other libraries--also University medical school libraries are very good. Read a bunch, then sift for commonalities, then try what you think might work. Also the book "Miracle of MSM" is very good.
The protruding disc thing--nothing will force it to go back once its blurped its way through the vertebrea--but sticking out is not the problem---getting it irritated and inflamed IS. Once something is inflammed, you have BIG trouble until it subsides. You can either treat to mask the pain, or to cause the inflammation to subside. MSM causes the inflammation to subside. Glucosamine does too (studies found it as effective as ibuprofin in pain relief) , and so does the omega 3,6 and9 in flaxseed oils. Better yet they also make it not happen so fast in the first place. Production of the prostiglandins that causes inflammation is inibited as is the accompanying enzyme that causes bone spur formation. The body is trying to make you stop moving the grating/hurting part by imflammation because things don't move well when swollen like that. The pain is also to make you stop moving it. Unfortunately, the way to get synovial fluids into the spinal areas is by movement--and also the stuff in glucosamine and chondroitin helps entice it into there. The enzymes that cause bone spurs are trying to "fix" the problem by laying down some new bone layers, but you don't really WANT that--spurs hurt. Vioxx and other Cox 2 (that's the prostiglandin) inhibitors stop the production of the prostiglandin but NOT the enzyme, which means less pain now but bone spurs later---more pain later. Glucosamine has several studies now that show it helps form new connective tissue, but its only been studied/repeated in knees. Chondroitin is touted but no double-blind studies show impressiver results YET...but many reports are looking positive.

we could do that---is there a reason we should NOT have it here as long as we keep it under this thread? Sarajane

Cool, thanks Sarajane.
I didn't get my RA diagnosed properly until someone took the time to take a complete *history*, and interpreted the details of my subjective experience... correctly. The 'objective' tests didn't show it.

Yes, that's exactly what I want. All of your info was very informative and I am saving it for further research. I meant to ask my chiropractor about this on Friday when I went, but he was in a rush and I completely forgot until after he had left. I'm planning on putting in a phone call to him later this week and asking his advice on all this.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

That's the brand I got... There was an 8 oz bottle for $8 something.... Did you get it at a co-op? And, did you get the version with "fiber" in it? That one was cheaper by a couple of dollars. Kaytee "Simplexities" on
It is definitely a lot harder to think clearly and keep your mind on one thing when you're in pain, so of course when it's unceasing it will make you seem absent-minded.
yeesh!!! its $8.00 per pound here. Sarajane

That was at the health food store, and I didn't see it at the grocery store. But, you know, the first thing is to find it and try it. Then I can find a better supplier.

I get my flaxseed oil in capsules from drugstore.com I've been taking two
500 mg. capsules every day for a couple of months, since my neurosurgeon recommended I try it for my arthritis. My knees and hips are noticably better, and don't hurt as much when a cold front approaches. I'm noticing a little less stiffness in my fingers in the morning, too.Unfortunately, those aren't the areas that the doctor wanted to improve. The neck and left arm are still really painful, and (gross alert) I can move the bone graft on my neck. (found out when I was washing my neck in the shower -- really, really squicked me out, I'll tell you) Doesn't bode well for my next appointment in two weeks.
DD is also taking flaxseed oil. Her pediatrician recommended it for the "growing pains" she's been having these past few months. She's stopped complaining, so I expect that it's doing at least a little something.
