LOL here's another one of those interesting "perspective" things. If I see a picture, even with a coin or ruler beside it, I can't quite grasp it. But if someone tells me is 18 mm long, I know the size instantly. My verbal is stronger than my visual. Drove me nuts learning to fly, because visually I can't quantify what "5 miles away" looks like.

Plus, there's no guarantee that the image will display at the same size on everyone's monitor.

Karen, I'll take time later to check your auctions with these questions in mind, but let me ease your mind about switching over to .gif images. yes, they load quicker, but they are really best for a specific type of image, and photos are NOT it. GIFs are best for images that have larges blocks of the same color -- think logo art or line art. While the background of your photo may seem like a large block of the same color, in a photograph, it really isn't. And what you would probably save on that, you would loose in quality on the details of the beads.

I would suggest that you get as close as you can to capture the details and then crop the picture as closely as you can and the picture still be useful.

Because the world's full of all of us, I'd say do it both ways as you put up new merchandise. Personally, the coin thing works best for me. You tell me something is 3mm and I don't know that from Adam. But you give me something to compare it to, then I know if it's what I want or not.

But some people are wired differently. You tell them it's pictured twice it's actual size then they can look at it and go, okay it's half that, and know it's what they want.

Others know exactly what 18mm looks like. Me? I know it's less than a yard!

Yes. A .gif with the number of colors required to give you good resolution on such a photo would actually be a much larger file than a decent .jpg of the same image would be-- therefore it would take longer to load. For stuff with just a few colors, a .gif is often the way to go. But it isn't always the best choice, and it virtually never is for photos.

at one time, we had midi files on author's pages, if we found something that truly fit the author's books. [theme from Perry Mason for Erle Stanley Gardner]. we quit doing it for two reasons - copyright problems and people were surfing from work.

Well, I just ordered some French wires from Rio, and when I got them they were HUGE -- twice the size of the ones I normally get! I don't know how common it is for people to see that size, though I'd think it was unusual. (I also don't know how I'll use the damn things...)

Here's another one - PLEASE use re-sizeable frames - better yet, no frames at all. If I have to keep scrolling around to see the main part of the page in its entirety, I give up and go elsewhere.

I definitely agree. Also, please designate the width and height of each image so they don't "crawl". With designated size, the page will load as it should be seen, until the images catch up.

Ideally, on a 56K connection I'm not waiting more than 20 seconds for a main page to load. Thumbnails are your friends. :)

As a buyer based in the UK, I don't like the use of coins to show scale for beads or jewellry. I have no idea how big American coins are! I prefer sizes...in metric please :o)

This makes sense to me, though currently I'm not doing overseas sales. I had too much trouble with people from questionable areas of the far east trying to scam me on guitar sales early on, and I'm not interested in becoming an expert in export laws and tariffs-- I don't know where I am and am not legally allowed to send things and, when I tried to find out, I got bogged down in so much guv'mint double speak that I came away more confused than I was before I looked.

I know that there are some areas I can ship to with no real problems, but I think the entire US is a large enough potential market for now. I may revisit this issue if I really start selling a lot.
