Re: toggles

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Christina Peterson" :

]I was thinking last night that I'd like to use adjustable toggles. It would ]be pretty easy. Have the bar on one side and plain large loops hooked ]together with small loops on the other side. And of course the beaded ]variation would be a loop (or double row brought together every 1/3 inch or ]so with a bar. Or beaded bar. Or why not with a long (cylindrical or ]bicone bead). Anyone ever seen long beads with a hole side to side in the ]middle? ] ]Odd thoughts, at odd hours.

keep 'em coming - i really like those!

That is an intruging idea. I am trying to make all of my pieces adjustable and would like to use toggles , but don't because I can't figure out how to do it. Hmmmm..

I made recently a free-form peyote bracelet that has a long tube bead (got it in a cheapy Indian lampwork mix) as part of the toggle. I beaded a base of peyote stitch and then attached the bead to that. I also put a loop of beads around the center of the long bead attached to the peyote strip so it wouldn't move much. It's held up so far, but I've only worn it once.

Good idea. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the long beads with holes through the short axis. If I find a source, I'll pass the word.

Hi, I don't know if you like to use beads made of polymer clay, but I have made this exact thing using clay. I do put an armature under the clay for added protection, but some of my earlier toggles/clasps were just clay and they held up fine.

Maybe those barrel buttons (I think that's what they're called?) could work. I don't know offhand where to find them, though.

Oh, I know the sort you mean. They went on what I remember as being called a 'Loden Coat' (sp?), and I think they'd work wonderfully for the purpose.

Well, as long as you don't put them with crystal and delicate silver, etc. I've never seen them in something I'd want to put on a necklace, but yes, that's the sort of thing I was thinking of.

Agreed. They are on the wrong scale for something like that. For something less bulky, I'd probably go for a light-gauge toggle or S clasp that didn't compete with the body of the thing.

Hi Tina,

Here's a page that shows what I am talking about.

you do PMC, you could do the same type of thing with that clay. I haven'ttried PMC yet, so I don't have any technique to share about it. And pardon the example I used....I'm at the end of the application process for graduate school and just grabbed what was handy. :)

If you have any questions, let me know.

All the best, Deborah

This is a wonderful idea - polymer clay clasps!!! Just think of the possibilities! Polymer clay artists could auction a sets of polymer clay beads, with matching clasps! I'd buy it! :)

That looks nice. And yes, I've been thinking of variations to do with PMC. But you know how weird minds are, always thinking, Yes but how about a different way.

Thanks,

Tina
