Beach glass is glass (often from garbage) that is washed by the ocean against the sand until it's softly rounded and etched. The term can also be used for glass that has been tumbled. Usually you can see a difference. In Harry's glass you can recognize the shape of a broken piece of glass. In the real stuff, the corners are much softer, and often the parts that were originally flay are pitted and wrped looking.

< Christina and the others gave a very good description. If you are old enough... think back when you were a kid and you went to the beach. While you were playing in the sand, you noticed these beautiful shiny objects if the sun hit them just right and you may have thought them to be diamonds. That is beach glass. From years of people, mostly fisher men and the occasional drinking buddies toss their bottles into the surf and through time many broke up and became smaller pieces of glass that the surf and sand turned into smooth pieces of art and washes them up onto the beach. It is true that a lot comes from old dumping and landfills, but the bulk comes from the person who was to lazy to find a trash can.I on the other hand do not have the years to wait for the natural process of the seas, oceans and lakes to turn the glass into a natural beach glass product... so I use tumblers to do it and I can achieve in 4 to 7 days what it takes mother nature years to complete. Now by a simple accident I have found that I can take this glass from a rough frosted look and feel, to a silky satin look and feel that is almost completely smooth, but still has the frosted look. I know I could also take the broken bits back to a perfect smooth shine, but then it wouldn't be sea - beach glass. I hope I haven't rambled to much and have answered your question. lol

< I saw some of that kind before. A friend here sent me some and it's nothing like the beach glass we have on Lake Erie. Most of the glass found here is frosted and smooth. And most of it is shiny, but it does have a matte finish when it is dry. It may be because we don't have those monstrous waves and course sand? BTW I can claim my tumbled glass as beach glass..., because..., I use a similar grit to that of sand and the water I use comes from Lake Erie. :) So I do have real beach glass! lol

Oh, no!!! We don't have groomed beaches here in NZ - just plain ol' what nature dishes up is what you get..... and they're lovely.. at least I think so.. and I live 5mins from the beach and wouldn't have it any other way.. I used to live ON the beach - 90 mile beach in the Far North of NZ. It was gorgeous!!
