Babylon 5. The connection to "purple and green" is an episode in which the Drazi (one of the common alien races on the station) are having their equivalent of "presidential elections". The two parties are Purple and Green, assignment is made by random chance, and then they fight it out until only one side is left standing. All over the planet... and the station as well, with the Drazi segment living there. It's absolutely hilarious, and makes just about as much sense as the way we elect our politicians!

Sounds interesting.
Well... the election period goes on for a Drazi year, and the fights were disrupting the station. So Ivanova (half by sheer luck) discovered a way to get round the whole issue by putting *all* the station's Drazi into the same party.
Oh, it is! If you know anyone who has the episodes, see if you can watch it. You'll die laughing.
