Some stuff I found to look at

Yep, that should work, too. I have been drinking lemon ginger tea in the tea bags. Honey straws sound really good!

Well hell, no wonder you are sick, LOL. Nope, Theraflu is 100% chemical. Actually when I detox I do get very sick, Jalynne. I suggest drinking spirulina (powered form dissolved in water) to help with the purification process. You even feel healthy, drinking all that green stuff.

Oh Kandice, is the cough syrup helping at all? Those kind of coughs hurt just doing it.

Well, it works when I am awake, but not as much when I am trying to sleep. I was able to get a few hours sleep when sitting up against pillows in bed, but that hurts my back. LOL, I can't win! Seriously, I try and sleep as much as possible because it helps speed the healing process. The coughing does hurt a lot. I hope it's gone soon. The ginger tea is helping tonight, though. :D

Unfortunately the C will negate the effects of the zinc....

You need zinc gluconate lozenges, no vitamin C. The theory is that the zinc coats your throat, barring the multiplication of the cold virus.

For those who can't stand the lozenges, try ZiCam nasal spray. Same concept, except it blocks the nasal passages then the throat, and doesn't taste. Also has the advantage of being lo-carb. :-)

interesting..where did you learn that? at the natural food store where i get all my natural and herbal stuff, their herbalist said just the opposite. Not trying to be argumentative, just want to get all the info I can.

Feeling somewhat better today, but no voice yet.

In a past life (LOL), I planned to be a nutritionist, and I studied until my eyes were crossed (they're better now;o). I have never ever heard that vitamin C will negate the effects of zinc. Not saying it's not true, but I, also, would like to know:o)

I am an avid zinc-popper, and almost all the zinc lozenges you can buy in stores have vit C in them, as well. I prefer non-vit C lozenges, though, because I normally get more than enough vit C in a day, and your body doesn't STORE it, so I'd rather not be paying for something my body isn't going to use.

Anyone have any other home remedy suggestions for Jalynne and I?>

My friend Adam - the one who passed away back in June.... was from a Polish family - and half the family had asthma (including Adam).

He once told me his mother's remedy for coughs and congestion was take 1/2 c honey and 1/2 c vinegar (yeah - weird)... and mix it together - and put it in a bottle. When you need to stop coughing..... take 1/2 cup of hot water and stir in 2 T of the mixture and drink. I know - sounds weird, I never tried it - but he said it was the cough medicine of their household for 18 years. Probably - the honey and hot water to soothe - maybe the acetic acid in the vinegar helps cut the stuff in your throat?

well - you can always try it and tell us if it works - he swore he still used it when he got colds. (still miss him dearly at work .... sigh) AND then I did an internet search and found this - it sounded good

"Herb Tea for Cold Sufferers: Stephen Buhner, author of the invaluable manual Herbal Antibiotics (Storey Books), recommends this recipe as the best herbal tea for curing the common cold. Having tried it, I can vouch for its effectiveness. I've taken the liberty of adding fresh ginger to the recipe, for its taste and antibiotic qualities. Relief is fast and the tea tastes very medicinal, but good and soothing.

2 tsp. sage leaves, chopped 3 slices fresh ginger Juice of half a lemon 1 tbsp. wildflower honey dash of cayenne (to induce sweating -- may be omitted if fever is not present)

Place the sage and ginger in a mug and add 10 ounces of boiling water. Cover with a dish for 10 - 15 minutes, before adding honey and lemon juice. The dash of cayenne can be stirred in at the end. Enjoy hot, and if you're using the cayenne, stay bundled to avoid a chill. Cayenne will make you sweat and a chill is the last thing you need. Drink several cups a day during the duration of the acute phase, when you feel really lousy.

got it at -

Hey, my post actually went out! :-)

Where I heard it... to be honest, I don't remember. It was when I was researching the zinc lozenges a few years back when they first came out. Yes, I know most have vitamin C as well; makes it difficult to find one that doesn't. I will try and find more.

I do recommend the ZiCam though, it works just as well without the nasty taste... :-)

Since you mentioned the ZiCam yesterday, I was curious, and did some research on it. Apparently, there's been quite a bit of controversy over it, because there have been quite a few people who have reported losing their sense of smell after using it. Here is a recent lawsuit involving this, even.

It's also only supposed to be usedfor a cold, not the flu that I have. These are the ingredients...and quite frankly, way too many chemicals for my body to handle right now, and i'm not real thrilled about the idea of squirting lye up my nose.

Active Ingredients: Zincum Gluconicum* 2X Inactive Ingredients: Benzalkonium Chloride, Glycerine, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Purified Water, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide.

Lye?? Holy crap! Ken and I are still sick, too, but slowly improving. This is the longest I have ever been sick. But as long as we are improving, I think it's going to be okay. If we haven't improved significantly by the end of the weekend, we're going to the doctor on Monday. :( I hate doctors, so I am hoping for the best.

Uh huh....that kinda got my attention. It's probably what's causing the problems with those who have lost their sense of smell after using it.

On the other hand, the ginger tea (which i'm drinking by the gallon, it seems...LOL) is WORKING!! My voice is back 80%. I was able to sing at rehearsal tonight, and didn't even feel like I had to try at all. So thanks all for the positive thoughts, and keep them up, because they're working, and i still have a ways to go. My period started yesterday, and the second day is always really painful...sneezing and coughing are HELL right now, which is why i'm desperate to get better ASAP.

Kandice, I'm glad to hear that you're feeling a little better. Keep it up. Going to the doctor is no fun, especially when they push meds...i hate that. Just give your body the nutrients it needs and some time, it'll heal itself. Hugs, prayers and healing thoughts on their way to you...(good thing they're not going too far, cuz i'm running out of energy...LOL), and to the rest of you who are battling colds and flu.

(((((hugs))))) Thanks, Jalynne - I hope you're feeling better as well. Today I am feeling more human, although sleeping at weird hours again because of all the sickness. I am glad to hear the ginger tea is working - it works well for me too. Here's to getting over the flu!!

My mind must be working at the moment. I just had one of those "Duh" moments. Of course ginger tea works. It's an anti inflamatory that is being applied to your throat and also being ingested!
