Split rings. How?

I recently bought some split rings because the jump rings sometimes leak, even though I'm sure they are tightly closed.

Now, how do I get the split ring open? Fingernails don't work. A knife? I'm a klutz and will surely cut off one or more fingers, probably useful ones. Do I have to buy one of those split ring tools I've seen in some catalogs? There must be another way!

I find the split ring tool to be the easiest way, but I'm sure you could try a nail file or something.

No, there isn't another way. This is one case where you must have the right tool to keep yourself from going insane. A knife would result in a hospital trip for stitches to be sure.

Just think of the tool as cheaper than the co-pay.
