WOOHOO...SO excited! But I Need advice

I'm so happyhappyhappy! For the past 4 years, I've been a volunteer at the local Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The director has seen my jewelry and loves my bead hobby and she said she's noticed the kids asking about it...she wants me to do a class with the kids! I'm sooooo happy! It's going to be in November with anywhere from 100 to

300 kids in 3 days of "classes".....GEEZ!

We discussed it and decided that we'd have the kids make bracelets or necklaces for their Mothers for Christmas. I'm supposed to contact the local bead shop and Walmart and ask them for donations of supplies for the classes. Lordy, I'm no good at asking for things like that...do you think it'd be ok if I wussed out and wrote them a letter, or is this something that should be handled in person? I'm a bundle of nerves about that part of the project!

I'm thinking it'd probably be best to stick with bracelets, since we're going to be tight on the supplies. I also think that the stretchy beading cord would be best, since we wouldn't need to get any crimps or pliers (that'd be a lot of pliers needed LOL). AND I think they'd enjoy learning different knots.

Now the fun part....what kind of beads should I ask for? Would it be too greedy of me to ask them for some fire-polished, pearls, glass, etc? OR should I ask them for monetary donations and do my own shopping?

Oh the possibilities! :) April :)

MANY large chains have a very specific procedure they must go through

- some taking up to a year!

definitely go in person - with a printout you can leave with them regarding WHO the sponsor is; WHEN the event will be held, and a deadline for the supplies; WHERE the event will be and where you want the supplies delivered; WHY the event is being held; and not least, WHAT they will get out of it!

you're on a really, really short deadline, and many may not be able to help for just that reason. the people at the "Y" should already be aware of that.

April,

Please send me your snail mail address off list. I have a boatload of stuff you can use. I'm clearing out all my less expensive beads and a lot of Czech and Indian stuff. Also, I have ten rolls of Opelon stretchy cord you're welcome to have.

oooh boy, is DH going to be happy to hear this. He is always telling me to "get rid of those damn bead you know you'll never use."

I have always been good at asking for donations. The folks may want a letter anyhow for tax purposes. They can fill in how much they gave you in retail stock.

Woo Hoo is right. I would be happy too, but 300 kids (geesh).

I don't have a lot of stuff that I can send (I have a relatively small stash of beads) but I'll be glad to donate!

And what are the ages of these children again? Do we need to be concerned about anyone putting beads in their ears, up their noses or swallowing them?

Me too, me too! I have a ton of inexpensive "practice" materials here that I'll probably never use, and I am moving soon and will likely just toss them, anyway. They are yours, if you want them.

I'd say me too, I have a tub full of beads I don't think I'll ever use, but it would cost a fortune to get them to you. It'd be expensive enough to send them to someone in the UK...

Only 300? I'd love it. I'd be totally drained afterward, but while it was happening, I'd be totally stoked. (Can you tell that kids give me energy?)

Teaching 300 kids (or adults, for that matter) at the same time strikes me as needing a team to wander up and down the aisles between work tables, ready to look at what the kids are doing -as they do it-, and answer a bunch of questions as they pass.
