I have came from northern Ontario, The Near North area up around Northbay, Marten River to be exact. When I was a boy I started rock collecting, but didn't persue it and now wish I had. Oh well... who knows where life leads them.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Harry :

]I have several rocks that I would love to slab and ]I may take them into Cleveland and see if I can get someone to do them for me.

look for your local rock & gem club. most of the members there will have them, and i'll bet if you join the club you could work out some sort of arrangement with someone there.

]If you ask at around either at a community college or a rock club you may ]find someone willing to do classes. I found this guy from the local rock ]club that teaches and it is great. I go out to his house where he has all ]this great stuff to use and it only cost me $10 a night to work. He even got ]us into glass making but I haven't done too much since he doesn't have a ]good kiln.

maybe i'll have better luck in Seattle, then. i've done both of those things, and not had much luck here.

]Keep asking around someone has to be doing it and may be willing to let you ]work with them. If you attend rock shows or bead shows you may find someone ]there. Or put an add in your local newspaper asking if anyone does ]silversmithing and would be willing to do classes.

the "rock show people" at all the local shows do the kind of thing in WAJ, which isn't quite what i'm looking for. we do have some interesting discussions at the meetings, though, comparing styles.

since i'll be moving in a few months, i'll look more when i get to Seattle.

thanks for the help - my community college looked at me like i'd lost my mind.

I want to thank everyone for all these great tips and I have been following most of them. The last few days have been a search and learn experience, plus my supplier in NZ, has been teasing me about his tan and wanting to know if I am cold. lol I hope he gets back soon, as I need more Paua. All I have left is what's in my tumblers right now. Thank you so much.
